It was the Chicagoland that got me hopeful.

Yesterday I learned that Sean Connery was the first choice to play Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ian McKellan gave such a masterful portrayal it is difficult to see anyone else in the role, but it would have been interesting to see.

TIL that New Orleans has a big St Patrick's Day thing. This is our first time here and we chose to come after Mardis Gras to avoid the crowds. Oops.

Pretty much any major holiday gets jazzed up in NOLA.

For example, Thanksgiving isn’t just a time for family gatherings, it’s also the annual Bayou Classic- a battle in the Superdome between two of the state’s biggest college football rivals. It’s akin to the Red River Shootout. Last time I was there at the time, St. Charles Ave. near the Dome was so gridlocked, that drivers caught drinking booze would get approached by cops on foot or horseback who would tap on the glass, give them a verbal warning, and tell them to stash their hootch out of sight.

OTOH, the last Thanksgiving I was there, there was a shooting, those same cops cleared St.Charles of civilians in 5 minutes while simultaneously flooding it with the vehicles of first responders.
