I was very sad to hear about this. My condolences to his family.
His red and blue Basic D&D box set with the Erol Otus art work introduced me to the game and I think it was one of the finest RPG products ever produced.

Sad news indeed. As with many others the first red box set was my first real introduction to the game (as a DM with little clue on how to play). B4 is still my favourite mod of its era and regularly gets a dust off.

Thanks for the memories. Condolences to those close to you. R.I.P.

Next to Gary, Tom may have been one of the most influential people in the early history of D&D; I seem to remember a poll on these forums years back where a HUGE chunk (not majority, but maybe a plurality) of the gamers on ENWorld started with the Moldvay version of the rules.

I certainly got into the game with the Moldvay rules. Rest in Peace, Mr. Moldvay.

Damn.

First and foremost, my condolences to Mr. Moldvay's family.

Mr. Moldvay,
I got your Basic & Expert sets for Christmas of '84. This was after I had seen some other kids playing at summer camp and hounded my parents to buy them for me. I just want to say thanks for some very good memories. Many Thanks! Rest in peace.

As I'm typing this post, my copies of the Basic and Expert rules, the Caves of Chaos and the Isle of Dread are sitting at my elbow. They are battered, torn and covered with soda and pizza stains. Several are held together with crumbling masking tape. I'm going to go find a quiet spot and read for a while.

And I'm going to remember.

That is a very cool idea. Awesome homage idea.
