Well, I did a bit of quick research and it appears that he died in Akron, Ohio. According to a couple of sites I checked, the obituary from the Akron Beacon Journal follows:

March 8th is quite awhile ago.... I wish we'd known sooner.

This is the version I started out on too. Playing with my older brother and his friend, we created 6 1st level magic users and headed into the Caves of Chaos only to get eaten by stirges in our very first encounter. I was 8 or 10 years old. And hooked.

Condolences.

This is sad. Sadder that the news is being buried under the Dragon/Dungeon stuff. Tom's Basic set was my first foray into D&D as a kid, he had as large an impact on my childhood as anyone else I haven't met. Condolences to his family and friends.

Ditto... wow what it did to a 14 year old mind!
I know this isn't what you're talking about, but I bought a couple of used copies of the Molday/Cook basic book from Half-Price Books. *Both* of them had Morgan Ironwolf's nipples drawn in with pencil.

...Wow, my birthday was his deathday. That's downright creepy, even if I'm only getting the news now (along with the Dragon and Dungeon nuke).

I, too, was introduced to the game with that Basic Set (though my first actual copy was Frank's red books that BiggusGeekus showed us the cover of).

I move that this day be forever afterward called "Black Thursday" in gaming fandom- just as the day the market crashed and started the Great Depression was called Black Tuesday.
