Tomb of Horrors - your experiences?

First Post
Fourteenth thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

I DM'ed this one, and I'm sure my experience is similiar to everyone elses - death, and lots of it. I've had one group actually make it to Acererak's tomb (most were fooled by the MacGuffin) only to be killed very quickly by the demilich.

Death. Death. Death.

I DMed this twice way back in middle school. The first party all died in the hallway. That was a short session. The second party all jumped through the wrong portal one after another. Dead. That was a short one as well. I never did get to run through the rest of it.

This a is one of the best modules out there. Sure, there can be lots of death but if you have a party ready to think and really on their toes it can be a great experience.

i waited 10 years to run this one. finally convinced the players to pull some of their old PCs out of retirement for a one-shot.

they lasted 10 whole minutes before the TPK.

so we hit reset and started again.

I've played and DM'd this one. As a player we made it through, but with heavy losses. There were seven players with two characters each plus henchman. The juggernaut killed most of us, but we laid the smack down on Acerak. When I DM'd it for a party of 4 high level 2nd edition characters they made it all the way through with only one fatality.

I've NEVER had a party complete the darned thing. As awesome as it is, it's a little TOO awesome - people were crushed, spiked, burned, boiled, gender-changed or maimed beyond the point of being willing or even CAPABLE of completing it.

My friend pulled it out in the 80s, we made characters, then he said "I can't run you through this, there is no point to it. Its just random no save death traps with no ways to figure them out leading to a party screw ending." So I came close but never entered the tomb of horrors.
