Tome of Horrors - The Art (oh the horrors!)

It was a very good book, content-wise. The art in most cases was abysmal (the mist dragon? gah!), but there were some beauties (Orcus and Geryon come to mind).

I was a little disappointed that there weren't enough higher CR creatures (and I thought that some creatures were nerfed in the conversion - though right now I can't recall which ones).

But it was my favorite (and most useful) book this year, without a doubt.

This book brought back memoires both because of the monster selections and the art. It diffiently has a first edition feel to it. I feel that using the word Daemon is the only word to use. They went back using the words demon and devil so why not daemon?Another thing that this book does is to make alot of the Fiend Folio monsters that were plan stupid and gave them viable backgrounds. But really guys a giant hamster???

They called them Daemons becuase that's what they were before the idiocy of 2nd edition was inflicted upon us all. And this book was about 1e feel, not 2e fear of zealot mothers.

Demons are demons in 3e and products like BoVD should show that fear of zealots is long past.

But like I said, BFG has a point - they probably didn't have a better choice. But you do not have a point.

Edit: I responded to flexor in his own tone and should not have. Edited.

Whoa, I'd prefer this didn't dissolve into an argument over the old daemon/yugoloth schism, we've had plenty of those on the board before and they never reach any useful conclusion.

Boz - on the content of the book, I'm still giving it a thorough read-through, once I've done that I'll come back with more indepth comments on that. I still can't help but laugh when I read about the '15 ft tall black salad' though :D

I'm sure they would have called them Yugoloths if they were allowed to.

actually... no. the fellas who put the book together were adamant about using the 1E name of daemon. confusing? perhaps, when you are also using names like demon and demodand. it's certainly eviller than yugoloth though, which to the best of my knowledge is a made up word. scarier? not necessarily, but to each his own i say. personally, i prefer daemon to yugoloth, but i am fine working with either (as planescape was my fetish in 2E). but, they were converted before i joined the creature catalog, so i had no say either way. :)

ultimately, i think scott and clark did the right thing by keeping the daemon name, as the intent was attempting to preserve 1E feel, and in that regard, it certainly works.

When I first saw the book I was like, "Oh kewl, more monsters." Then when I opened the book I was like a kid going through a candy store jumping around and screaming, "Oh my god they converted so many of the good ol monsters!!!!"

Personally I love the book. The artwork could have been better in some instances but then again some of the artwork was sweet. =o)
