Tower Shield

Yeah, it's funny though how you can cast disintegrate on someone targeting their shield, and obliterate them, leaving the shield thoroughly intact. Wonky that is.

That appears to be incorrect. Disintegrate is not a 'targeted' spell (i.e. it does not have a "target" line). It is instead an "effect" spell (i.e. a ray)
(yes, D&D's terminology here is indeed confusion).

It appears that the tower shield would work fine on effect spells (like rays).

Disintegrate is not a targeted spell.

Sorry, no Duck Dodgers for you :(

Edit: What mvincent said.

You can still be targetted by touch spells, thus validating Baumi's question. Having a shield-toting tank myself with Shield Ward in an RPGA sanctioned game, I would say about 90% of the DMs I've had allowed the bonus to my touch AC, solely because targetted spells are really the only thing that can hit you, save AoEs. The other 10% changed their mind after this was explained.

I wouldn't allow Tower Shields with Shield Ward, since Shield Specialization is a prerequisite, and Shield Specialization doesn't work with tower shields. Seems funny to get, say, Shield Specialization (buckler), then be allowed to use Shield Ward for tower shields. But that's just me.

Are you sure about this? I don't have my PHBII at work (yes, I know, I lack dedication ..... to the game), but I don't see why you couldn't take Shield Specialisation (tower shield). I don't recall any text specifically excluding it.

Shield Specialization requires you to select a single type of shield from a list: buckler, light, or heavy. Tower shields aren't included on the list.

This also means that in a strict RAW game (like the RPGA campaigns) it means you cannot use Shield Spec. with any of the exotic shields from Races of Stone.

I'm assuming by targetted spells, we're talking about things like Charm Person and Magic Missile, as distinct from spells which require an attack roll, like Scorching Ray or Ray of Enfeeblement?

OTOH, it seems that you can cast hold person and inflict wounds on someone through their tower shield. Still a bit wonky.
