I'm sure they'll spend plenty of time fighting the Saracens, but judging from the preview, it looks like the main bad guy is going to be the "eeevil" leader of some monastic knight order, who does a lot of scowling at the camera and has lines like "Give me war!", with Brendan Gleeson as his henchman.

Odd....I wonder if that would be either the Knights Templar or the Hospitallers? Neither order were "evil knightly orders", so it would be a bit of a twist to have them as the enemy. But, it's Hollywood, so...

The guy talking about strength is David Thewlis.

Anyone bored of Bloom yet?

[sarcasm] I am glad he's stretching his acting chops with this roll...a blacksmith (Pirates)...and he's wielding a sword (6th of 13 movies)...and "historical/fantastical" (8 or 10 of 13)...[/sarcasm]

Well, it looks like he's being typecast for those roles. If you look at IMDB, 6 out of his 13 roles have *not* been sword in hand.

I'm no fan-boy, and I haven't decided whether I care for his acting....but given that he's basically fresh out of acting school, I'm willing to wait and see if he grows. Other actors who were originally just pretty faces have done so.....and many haven't.

I guess time will tell.

Who are the bad guys supposed to be in the movie? I haven't found many discussions of the plot online..

There was a review of one of the test screenings at AICN.

The main bad guy is a noble of the Jerusalem court, who poisons the Christian ruler of Jerusalem (the king was keen on allowing all three faiths to co-exist, whereas the noble wants to slay all Saracens). The king's infant heir takes the throne and the noble garners enough political strength to escalate the conflict. In the end, Saladin offers to let the Christians leave if they surrender Jerusalem, which they do.

To be fair you should not count LOTR as three movies since he was playing the same character. So let's see he's done LOTRs, Pirates, Troy and now Kingdom that's a total of four characters out of 13 that is hardly typecasting.

I happen to like Orlando Bloom I have enjoyed every role he has played. I suspect some of the backlash that I see on gaming boards against him has to do more with the fact that he played an elf than his acting. It just seems rather interesting to me that some of the posters who don't like Bloom also post how much they hate elves in general.

To each there on I think their are several actors making movies who can't act yet others disagree. I guess it comes down to personal taste.

I think it's safe to say that at least some of the dislike for Bloom comes from men who don't care for how much a lot of women (and some other men, come to think of it) drool over him. Dagger-envy, if you know what I mean ;)

Couldn't agree more.

He can act?

EDIT: I don't dislike Bloom, and I thought he was fine in LOTR... But then I saw him in other movies, playing the exact same character in each. From what I've seen so far, as an actor Bloom has the range of a flute with all its keys glued shut.

Added to the fact that Bloom seems to have been typecast as Mr. Fantasy/Period film guy, which means he's gotten overexposed in movies catering to our geek subculture. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

Ah, I see you count 13 movies even though I cannot, because it was the same character? Sorry, but no: Three movies seperately released is still three movies. So PotC2 doesn't count because it's the same character? Harrison Ford didn't have 3 SW movies or three Indy moies because it was the same character?

13. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (2006)
12. Elizabethtown (2005)
11. Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
10. Haven (2004)
9. Troy (2004)
8. The Calcium Kid (2004)
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
5. Ned Kelly (2003)
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
3. Black Hawk Down (2001)
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
1. Wilde (1997)

So in 5 of 13, he played the same character. Legolas or Will.
7 of 13 were "sword wielding" characters.
6 of 13 were "Historical/Historical Fantasy". Am not counting LOTR in this, that's pure fantasy. Troy is in here, as it is treated more historical, though obviously the movie is horribly flawed.

(And lots not forget the plan is to film POTC2 & POTC3 at the same time.)

Hey, I am not knocking him for making a paycheck. Obviously he's molded that insta-fame from LOTR into a decent paycheck...much better then ANYONE else who was in that movie. (some people like cate and ian are beyond that point.)

I would just hope that he seriously start trying to do something new, different. Hell, try doing a buddy cop flick. Just so long as he doesn't star opposite a dog or something...

Actually, what I would like to see is a movie having nothing to do with "fantasy"/"history"/"fantastical" (if you know what I mean) staring the nine actors who played the Fellowship.

A heist flick, a action/comedy, a straight up comedy...

I also want Dom & Billy to get some decent shots at roles this side of the Atlantic. Hell if Dana Carvey and Jon Lovits and Chevy Chase were given a shot at making travesties, let Dom & Billy get a chance. ;)

I think a lot of directors and producers see Bloom and think "Hey, he looks a lot like a swashbuckling action hero from the 30's! I'd love to have someone like that in one of my movies."

Also, hey Dr. Bashir from DS9 is in this movie! Rock.
