Transatlantic Sports Comparrisons (formerly Explain American football to me)

Also, there's Arena Football, which plays somewhat like Canadian Football (in that one player is allowed to be in motion towards the line of scrimmage at the snap) except that it is played indoors on a 50 yard field with fewer players.

Most arena football players play both offence and defence. This is theoretically possible in the NFL, but it's extremely rare these days.

Oh yeah, there are nets across the ends and if you attempt a field goal and it misses the goal, the ball bounces back into the field of play and it's live.

speaking from a place of ignorance... i believe that american football is to rugby, as baseball is to cricket. ;)
I'd say baseball is much more closely related to rounders than cricket, unless there was some weird convergent evolution thing going on.

That fine example of Reagan-Era Hollywood, and the comedy stylings of Rodney Dangerfield, Back to School...

Many of the exterior scenes in that movie were shot at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, during the fall of my junior year (1985). The dorm that he "lived" in was actually a women's dorm, across the street from my own dorm.

i'm not familiar with rounders. :)

i was making the baseball-cricket comparison, because AFAIK both involve throwing a ball, swinging a wooden implement, and running. ;)

Rounders is, as near as damn it, the same as Baseball. Same lay out of the pitch, hit the ball and run round, although in rounders it is thrown underarm. Always makes me laugh you yanks get so worked up about a girls game.. ;)

Funny, we think the same way about you Euros and soccer :D (though our girls are really good at soccer, possibly even enough to get worked up about, so maybe not such a great example...).

Well, it would make women's soccer more interesting if they just wear only sports bra and t-back, in addition to shoes, socks and shin-guards (and gloves for the goalies). :p

Rounders uses a round bat and you run around four bases rather than between two wickets. Also, you take it in turns to bat, rather than two of you batting until you are out as in cricket.

Basically, imagine baseball but the bat is about half the size and you aren't allowed to drop it. The fourth base is not the same place as where you bat from so it is played on a pentagon rather than a diamond.

And you only score if you get round in one go ('a rounder'), otherwise you just get to stay in for another go. I think that that is different in baseball, right?
