Translate Renaissance Clothing descriptions: English to German

Sofi's Stitches is looking for an individual fluent in both English and German with an interest in Renaissance Clothing to translate Dressing Instructions and Item Descriptions from English to German.

Work consists of 9 sets of Dressing Instructions and about 12 Item Descriptions. Dressing Instructions are roughly 1 page each in English. Item Descriptions range from 50-300 words each.

Payment offered is in the form of credit at the Sofi's Stitches online or retail stores. We are offering $10.00 (USD) per hour of work.

Possible solution

I came across a site which may assist you freetranslation.com. As you are only translating small portions of text this may be a possible solution.
As an example I entered the following text:
Here is a website which is able to translate English to German. I am writing this in english and allowing the site to translate it as a gauge for how good it actually is. Hopefully if it is good enough you may be able to use it to translate for you.
And the translation came out thus:
Hier ist eine Website, die Englisch zu Deutsch übersetzen kann. Ich schreibe dies auf Englisch und Erlauben der Stelle, es zu übersetzen, als ein Messgerät, für wie gut es tatsächlich ist. Hoffentlich, wenn es gut ist, dass genug, den Sie es dürfen benutzen können, für Sie zu übersetzen.

Now, I must point out that I do not speak/read german and so do not know how effective this is. When I entered the text to be translated I attempted to make it wordy and somewhat convoluted to provide a wide range of words and phrases for it [site] to convert.

Hopefully this is a viable option for you.

To give an idea of the accuracy of automated free on-line translators, here is what you get when you tranlate that German translation back into English:

"Here a website that can translate English to German is. I write this in English and permitting of the place to translate it when a measuring instrument is actual, for how good it. Hopefully, if it is well, that enough, that you may be able to use it to translate for you."

If you want something truly accurate, Liz, which you will for costume description, you're better off using a good human translator.

I have even put the word to someone who lives in germany...
but...

In some cases there are time issues and the like for publications and deadlines to printers etc, etc, etc.

Not knowing the how intense these were for Lyz' Clothing descriptions I merely pointed out that there are some things out there which may help her if she so desired.

I personally would prefer to use a human translator as nuances and the best choice of words shouldn't be left up to computer programs. While a word may be grammatically correct for use in a sentence it sometimes doesn't illustrate the point being put across. Then there are the whole.."Grammer rules" which are hard to understand for those who even speak the language.

I am from Germany and I can tell you that the translation perhaps can help with vocabulary you don't know in the original text - but it doesn't sound professional to German speakers. It is similar to the instruction papers you get when you buy some technical devices made by manufacturers in asian countries .

Hello Lyz,
I am from Germany. The translation is not very good. Like cgern pointed out it does not sound professional to a German e.g. No German will translate "allowing the site" as "Erlauben der Stelle". If you want to sell your dressing instructions in Germany you should spend the money to hire a human translator.

The back Translation to English is better, really better than the Translation to German.
