Where are we?
We are in a box, stupid!
How did we get in here?
Nasty hobbitses. Theys locked us in!
We must get out, Smeagol's afraid of the dark!
You're afraid of everything. Aaarrggg! Let's us out!! Let's us out!!
Someone will help Smeagol! Nice Smeagol! Smeagol's friends help Smeagol...
You've got no...

Ahem...

Well. I have it in front of me. The TTT box set.
DVD box. Check. Making of Gollum box. Check. Smeagol statuette welded to the inside of the box. Check.

Oh... Right. Can someone who's performed the miracle already help me get Smeagol out of the box without tearing everything to shreds in there. He seems to be held in by some grey expanded polystyrene stuff which I would prefer not to cut to ribbons. So help me please, before I have to take a scalpel to poor Smeagol.

Noooooo! Nice hobbitses. Smeagol know secret way. Yes, secret way. Safe way.

Did they really only include the statue, and the Disc about the making of the statue as extras in the Gift Set?

What do you really get by spending so much more $ than the 'normal' EE?

Yep - you get statue, 1 disc & Gollum production sketches booklet extra. (About the same as the FOTR box set). Except for the fact that if you were in the UK you didn't get the National Geog. disc with FOTR :(

It's a very nice statue, though :p If I can get it out of the box...

On DVDTalk, a guy posted this to get Gollum out of his prison:
___________
It is tough, but it can be done without completely destroying the box. Here's the scoop on what I did...

First, pry the two rectangular cardboard supports (the ones holding the styrofoam) away from the back of the box (there may be some tearing, but not much if you are careful). Then "fold" that section of the picture off to the side, toward the triangular cardboard support in the front corner. Once this is out of the way, you should be able to pry the styrofoam out the box. It may seem like the styrofoam is still wedged in there, but it isn't. It is just glued to the bottom of the box. Once I had the styrofoam out, and removed the statue, I just put the styrofoam back, folded the picture back into place, and closed the box.

Thanks for the advice . . . I gave it a try and am happy to say that everything, at least visible, is undamaged and Gollum is free from his styrofoam prison. The only damage was to the lower part of the styrofoam and some of the inside of the cardboard (but it's not visible behind the picture paper).

The only thing I would add to your instructions would be to have a crowbar and chisel ready to use to remove the styrofoam from the bottom of the box. What were they thinking??

I managed to get the statue out with the BOX still intact, but I'm afraid the styrofoam insert was totaled (I used a little hobby scalpel to weaken it to where I could pull bits of the foam off, expose the white plastic tie, and cut that.)

I peeled the paper background and cardboard support tubes away from the edge of the box. Some peeling occured on the back of the insert, but the image wasn't harmed at all. This allowed me to life the entire insert out of the box. After that, the styrofoam lifted out easily when I pulled on Sméagol's head. Then I used sciscors (a hobby knife works as well) to separate the blocks of foam from each other, as they were taped. Then I used sicscors to cut the zip ties apart, and the styrofoam came apart easily. A little wear on non-visible areas, but zero casualties on anything important.

Note: Holding the box upside down and shaking it whilst screaming "My prescious! It musts be mine! Gets it out, gets it ouuuut!!" does not work. Even when done for three minutes straight.

(Skipped class today to go to Wal-Mart to pick this thing up :))

There is a companion statue of Gollum (not Smeagle) that is selling for nearly $80. Nearly same pose, available at WWW.SideshowWeta.com

Well he's out...

Hey, I didn't need another empty box anyway :(

Having freed the backdrop the styrofoam just wouldn't come free. I had to get into the box from the base and found a whole pot of glue under there. It seems that there are quite varying degrees of glueing in these boxes, if some of you could lift the blighter straight out...
