Sauron did not launch any attacks at all till after Saruman was defeated. In fact Sauron doesnt launch any of his attacks until Aragorn announces his existance to Sauron by using Sarumans Palantir to rip control of the Palantir that Sauron had been using.
Once Sauron knows that Aragorn exists he launches his attacks upon Gondor, as well as targets further to the West and to the North.

Eben said:Aren't there supposed to be battles in the north as well? I was kinda hoping to see some of these. Thats why the great exodus from Rivendell struck me as a bit odd. Maybe they'll skip this in the movies and have a rerun of the battle of the five armies, but this time before the gates of Minas Tirith.
