Turn Based Strategy?

Thurbane

First Post
Hi all,

I used to be a massive fan of the Warlords series of games (up to W4, with which Ubisoft effectively moved in and killed the franchise)...

Is there any other good turn based strategy games around nowadays, or is it a dead genre?

Cheers - T

I'm a big fan of Civilization 3. Civ 4 is reputedly good, too, but I haven't picked it up yet - I'll be playing Civ 3 for quite a while before I move on.

Currently playing Heroes of Might and Magic V, which is turn-based with a focus on combat. It's ok; fun but at times tedious. I'm still in the early stages, so perhaps it gets better.

I've never played the Civilization games. I may have to give those a try.

Not strictly turned based, but I always loved Medieval: Total War. I don't know much about the second iteration, but the original was a blast.

Currently saving money for a better computer. Once the summer rolls around I think I'll be able to afford something with a lot more kick, but until then I'm going to have to wait.

For some reason I could never get into a Civ game, but I loved Alpha Centauri. Go figure.

Heroes of Might and Magic is turn based, and can be very addictive. There's a (relatively) new one out that I have, but haven't put a lot of time in on. But really, if you are looking for gameplay and not graphics, you could get an older one and have a lot of fun with it. Very much a "just one more turn" game.

Front Mission 4 for the PS2 (should be available cheap used) is a good turn based tactical game. There's a ton of customization options for the mechs, good replayability and a terrific story line. If you like it, there was at least one previous game in the series brought over to the US for the PS1.

Master of Orion 2 is of course a classic, if you can find a copy.

This game is intended as an updating of the classic turn based strategy game "X-Com : UFO Defense". The developers are german so some of their english is a bit hinky, but the screen shots are looking positive and it is due for release in about a month.

That's because Alpha Centauri is the Best. Game. EVAR. ;)

But Civ IV is pretty good, too. Better than 3, anyway.

Indeed. Get H3 + expansions + WOG for almost twice the units than in the first release (almost 200 - more are unlikely to be added since there is a limit of 255 units).

And Master of Magic? It may be old (1993 IIRC) but still has no rival in the field of fantasy themed 4Xs. The closest was Age of Wonders (1, 2 and 2.5 as the Shadowsomething expansion was called, but it was a separate game), but it did not cut with me - too complicated, although it did have some nice features like three separate world layers (H4 also has this).
