TURTLEDOME! (Battle Bone!) -- Part 2

Drivan looks at Pinch with a slightly amused expression on his face. He can't know...

"Actually sir, that is the firm who we are going to be... dealing with. Thank you for the offer though, it is appreciated."

Mr. Pinch smiles.

"Well, then, I'm sure you'll receive excellent representation. They really are the best Daunton has to offer, excepting that wheelchair-bound elderly half-elven gentleman, Matchlock Ironsides."

"Vaunea no like death. Seem bad. Vaunea enter to fight. No enter to die. What fun death in arena...from bones?" Vaunea says, looking to the rest of the party. "Money not worth life. Not in here. No idea traps. No idea powers. Idea bad. Vaunea no like."

[sblock=OOC]I'm not really in for the *to-the-death* thing here. However, I am outvoted, and not the best talker of the group, so if people are really really wanting to play to the death, then Vaunea really doesn't have a good way around it. According to your math, two of us would have to survive for it to be worth it to us. We do have a lot of healing potions, but even then, we don't really know what the battle is about and the many traps the legion has in the arena that we don't know about. Just my opinion.[/sblock]

Drivan makes a mental note to look up Matchlock Ironsides after the Arena.

Turning to Vaunea he says, "Have faith! We will be able to defeat these skeletons. With your new armor and new experience you'll be able to protect us from them as well!"

[sblock=Moh]You forgot the double xp;)[/sblock]

Emral also tries to soothe the hesitant Minotaur. V, you go into battle expecting to die every day. This is normal for us, right?

[sblock=ooc] And it's not like we'll have to go back to being level 1 if our PCs die, right? Or is it? Don't feel obligated, but I do expect that if we die (in a 4e game) it's just our PCs. And we'll auto-rez, basically, if you want.[/sblock]

"No. Vaunea expect live. Here, expect death." Vaunea says hesitantly. "Vaunea no need money. Vaunea need life."

[sblock=OOC]I understand the double XP. But we don't have the gold to pay 2000 if we all die, unless Ken's going to buy back all of our armor. If we got a money stipulation per round, not all at once, like 200 for the first, 200 for the second and 600 for the last, SINCE the rules have changed, then I would be a lot more apt to go for it. And I wanted to keep Vaunea around for a while. This way, if we survive 2 rounds, it only costs us 100 gp per person. And you could sell it as "He still makes 100 per person if we all die before the end of the fight, plus we have packed the stadium for 3 rounds of competition, so that's making up for the 400 per person that he would have lost." Vaunea's just not savvy enough to suggest it.[/sblock]

[sblock=Temple of Lauto]One of the house rules in L4W is that the Temple of Lauto will "loan" PC's the money to resurrect if they wish. I assume this would then go into a side adventure with Ken to pay back the loan.

Basically, we risk losing money but in game terms that just means more adventure hooks if the party wishes to stay together.

As a player, I like the idea of more risk = more story hooks for the narrative to take an unexpected turn and go in a new direction.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]I still think that if we are to do this, then someone needs to bring up a new, not "all-or-nothing" pay schedule for the fight.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]I don't want to force anyone into risking their PC or treasure if they're not comfortable doing it.

I do disagree that it's a risk, but that's because as DM I know that if I TPK the party they don't get the treasure for that encounter. Same thing if the party is forced to run, or the treasure is captured by a rival group. That's why all-or-nothing isn't an issue for me personally: it's what happens all the time in D&D, in just about every adventure anyway.

In this case it *seems* different, due to a wager. I personally don't gamble, and as a player I'm not losing any money on this, and Emral will be raised (or not) if I want it done (or not). A small amount of money that's less than my share if we win is the cost of this; or I could re-submit the same guy.

I'm thinking that, with the number of potions we've got, plus the approval-meter, we should be okay. Ken could go clockwork and let us die, which is a challenge; but at the same time, we're not too awful at this game. I think we can do it.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]And I really don't want to be the one person stopping the rest of the party from doing what they are doing.

But I don't see why you would disagree with the risk aspect. I'm not saying Ken is out to kill everyone. But in a game where it is so easy to bring back a character, I don't see a DM feeling sorry and taking it easy on a group of PCs. To me, this is a more dangerous battle than a random encounter. And it is the "Boss" of this adventure. So, killing all the PCs here means that he can go and recruit *more* adventurers to fight the same battle, if need be.

So, if everyone else wants *to the death*, then I don't want to force everyone to do it my way. But, I still suggest talking to him about the payout schedule, since we are rewriting the rules anyway.[/sblock]
