Adi readies his staff, not sure if the bird is the only thing causing the other creatures to be silent. The fact that the bird stopped singing when he backed away is curious. Adi, not being the type to leave well enough alone, for the satisfaction of his own curiosity, takes a few steps toward the bird to see if it will begin to sing again.

Peering over, the strange bird, which seems to be visually dependent, starts to sing again when he notices Adi. As Vittero makes the landing, he sees Adi and moves beside him. "What are you seeing over here?"
Adi has no need to answer for Vittero immediately sees the curious birds, who not only sing but hang upside down from their perch when they do. "Hey! Come take a look at these birds."
As the sound of Vittero's suggestion fades, everyone can hear the marvelous song of the birds, which seems to have grown louder.

As Adisakti moves again to the edge of the cliff to peak over, he realizes that the silence is limited to his immediate vicinity, for farther insects, frogs, and birds still chirp and a bird of prey occasionally calls from far overhead.

Raven Elk, having grabbed Vittero before he could pitch himself off the ledge, quickly realizes that saving Vittero was the only thing that saved himself from doing the very same thing.
Raven Elk, without saying a word to the rest, aims Vittero and himself toward the direction of the next keep. It takes extreme will and determination to push himself away from the mournful beauty of the birds' song. Even sensing Way lines comes with difficulty, but without it, he knew he would fail at saving himself and his friend.
He does look back, but once, to make sure the others are following.

At first Adi doesn’t even notice that he is shuffling toward the edge of the precipice; but a moment of clarity, brought on by... something... he isn’t quite sure, but he thought he heard his mother’s voice behind him, causes him to understand the situation he is in. With great effort, he walks away from the edge, pausing every few steps to listen to the exquisite beauty emanating from the birds. Eventually he catches up to V and Raven, he takes one of V’s arms and helps guide him to the next keep.

The birds cease their mournful calling shortly after the crew leaves the ledge. Everyone moves back down the steps, through the pecans and figs and then up the stairs toward Keep 6. This particular structure seems to have fared well through the years. The porch area contains a similar symbol to the others, but the door to the keep is made of stone. It is closed and contains some inscriptions of its own.

Taylar looks over Vittero. Seeing the glassy-eyed long stare, puts his hands to either side of his head, manipulating Way to help him more quickly recover from the effects of the birdsong. "The group should not continue unless we are all well."
