Day 268: Gaining Momentum

OOC: All characters receive 5 developmental points.

Raven Elk... walks up to the spy and grabs her by the throat and leeches whatever life he can get to return his health so that he can remove the arrow without passing out or dying.
[sblock=Paranormal Assault]Raven Elk: 20(Bending) + 24(Leach) + 50(d100) = 94
Spy2: 0(incapacitated) + 26 + 37 = 63
Damage: 94 - 63 = 31% * 10 = 3
Body: -1 - 3 = -4, incapacitated
Body: 1 + 3 = 4, injured[/sblock]
GM: Raven Elk is unable to leach much from the incapacitated Spy, but even that little amount offers some help, as he removes the offending arrow and readies himself for whatever comes next. The Spy does not, yet, lose consciousness from the second drain on her life.

Nodding to Raven Elk, Adi turns on the balls of his feet to run toward the line of the enemies' camp to rejoin Maka against the remaining foes. As he runs, he, again, bends light to increase the natural shadows around him.
[sblock=Paranormal Effect]31(bending) + 15(darken) = 46[/sblock]
Taylar sneers and replies, "Your powers come from the same source with just a different Way of thinking." He reaches down to collect the short sword and shield from the drained soldier. He will charge at the lone soldier that was commanded to kill him.
[sblock=Reaction Time]Taylar: 31 + 22 + 18 + 50 = 121
Soldier4: 16 + 14 + 12 + 95 = 137[/sblock]
[sblock=Speed of Action]Taylar: 52(armor) - 17(strength) + 100(move) - 121 = 14
Soldier4: 20(armor) - 13(strength) + 100(move) - 137 = -30[/sblock]
GM: Taylar smoothly retrieves the deposited sword and shield of the soldier he just eliminated. As he lunges toward his only remaining, standing foe, he sees that the soldier has disobeyed his direct command and turned to run, having already gained 2 steps. Taylar can see at this point that he could not catch the fleeing foe.

Since it appears that his remaining soldier is going to run, Vittero drops his knife and draws an arrow to fire.
[sblock=Reaction]Vittero: 19 + 23 + 23 + 81 = 146
Soldier5: 16 + 14 + 12 + 57 = 94[/sblock]
[sblock=Speed of Action]Soldier5: 20 - 13 + 100(movement) - 94 = 13
Vittero: 32(armor) - 13(strength) + 200(bow) - 146(reaction) = 73[/sblock]
GM: The soldier runs through the trees in the general direction of Thisidaboga, at an angle that will rejoin the path. He has increased his distance to short bow range before Vittero can fire.

[sblock=Projectile Assault]Vittero: 19 + 23 + 23 + 86 = 151 + 50(short) = 201
Soldier5: 14 + 12 + 53 = 79
Damage: 201 - 79 = 122% * 10 = 12 - 7(armor) = 5[/sblock]
Maka moves as stealthily as possible, traveling two paces to the left, before firing again. His hope is to keep the guard guessing as to his location.
GM: Moving two paces to his left causes no change in the over-all distance to the previously struck soldier.

[sblock=Projectile Assault]Readiness (Combat) + Athletic (Commercial) + Clarity (Collegiate) + d100
Maka: 16 + 27 + 19 + 50 = 112 + 45(hiding) + 50(short) = 207
Projectile Avoidance: Obscurative (Commercial) + Analysis (Collegiate) + d100 + shield
Soldier10: 14 + 12 + 72 + 20 = 118
Damage: 207 - 118 = 89% * 10 = 9 - 7(armor) = 2
Body: 10 - 1 = 9 - 2 = 7, hurt[/sblock]
GM: Maka puts another arrow into the standing soldier, still not nearly as effectively as he would have liked. The soldier cries out and turns in the direction from which he was shot, looking for his attacker.

The injured soldier drops his sword to the ground and hollers out into the trees, having idea of the location of his enemy. "Stop firing! I beseech you! We are outmatched! We surrender!"

GM: The five remaining soldier, one of whom has two arrows in him, all drop their swords and begin to bunch together at the northern end of the line of the encampment. The two surviving soldiers at the northern end of the camp have fled. The priest and one spy remain alive but both are incapacitated. The Outsiders realize the priest may still be a threat as he can manipulate Way lines at a distance, despite being unable to move. Fortunately, everyone also knows that leaching life is only possible by touch.

"Stop firing! I beseech you! We are outmatched! We surrender!"

Angered by their cowardice Taylar screams back, "Did those villagers ask you to stop? Did they cry and plead as you do now?" Moving with sure steps he will go to the priest and deliver a killing blow with his sword. "Too dangerous to let live, for his beliefs and his powers," he explains.

Taylar will round up the surrendered soldiers and tie them up.

They took some older children with them when they departed.

Taylar will look for these children and at some point will go and retrieve his baton.

Day 268: The Battle Is Won

OOC: All characters who posted this past week receive 5 developmental points.

Angered by their cowardice Taylar screams back... Moving with sure steps he will go to the priest and deliver a killing blow with his sword... Taylar will round up the surrendered soldiers and tie them up... Taylar will look for these children and at some point will go and retrieve his baton.
Raven Elk enters the camp, hearing Taylar shouting... finds Taylar now binding the remaining soldiers.
Maka is lost in his own counsel.

Taylar moves back toward the priest with a quick purposeful movement. As he stabs the man with a killing blow, he finds that a newly fired arrow protrudes from the man's abdomen. Vittero, now standing beside Taylar, nods. "It seems we both found this one too dangerous to leave alive."

One more of the five remaining soldiers runs away once the heat of battle has abated. The four who have surrendered seem completely different men than those of an hour before. It is more than remorse. It seems to the Outsiders that these soldiers may have been under some form of paranormal influence of their commanding priest.

The one who Maka had shot, twice, is truly sickened when Taylar brings the captured children out of the priest's tent. There are two adolescent girls and three adolescent boys. They are all still stupefied and must be led like toddlers. Vittero looks at them and offers that they have had their sense of identity dampened and should recover within a few hours or so.

With the recruited help of Raven Elk, Adisakti drags the two dead spies back to the roadway and deposits them in camp. Quickly assessing the aftermath, there are the two dead spies, the dead priest, three dead soldiers, and four captured soldiers. There is a large canvass tent and a small canvass tent, still standing, though the larger tent has some burn damage. There are two, four-wheel wagons with paired donkeys still tethered to them. One wagon is almost empty, evidently having carries the functional supplies. The other wagon contains food and water, along with some cooking supplies.

One of the captured soldiers addresses the group. "I cannot believe the atrocities we have committed... all in the name of the Lord of the Day." He shakes his head. "It is a sacrilege. I would ask that you allow us the opportunity to make restitution. If you will so allow, I would like to return to the city we just sacked to help rebuild it."

This soldier seems truly genuine in his request.

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Maka emerges from his hiding place as the soldiers begin to surrender. He witnesses Taylar and Vittero make short work of the priest, and nods in silent agreement. After a few moments of reflective contemplation, he points at the priest and says, "This one was the true Blighter. We have never used our talents to control anyone's will, nor harm anyone who did not deserve it. Seeing as how you four were controlled, I cannot hold anger toward you. But you must promise to do more than to help that village rebuild. You must also promise to warn everyone you meet of this inconceivable malevolence, even at the risk of your own life. If we do not spread the word about this, the blight will grow un-checked, until it consumes everything we previously held dear."

Maka Ties Up Many Loose Ends

Maka searches the dead spies and soldiers, looking for usable equipment; it is his thought that if they are likely to face more brainwashed soldiers in the future, he'd like to do it on even terms. Maka compares his brown chitin buckler to that of the soldiers; he also compares his green chitin bracers and greaves to that which the soldiers wear. Last but not least, he takes a full suit of the double-knit wool armor, because it is obviously superior to his sheepskin tunic, pants, and boots. Maka also compares the quality of his weaponry (bow, arrows, knife) to that of the soldiers; if an upgrade is possible, he takes full advantage. Maka also makes a search for valuables and trinkets, paying special attention to any items which might have Way Proclivity.

After all of this mundane labor is finished, Maka turns his attention to helping Taylar question the children.

Maka asks one of the older children, "Did the priest say where he was taking you? Were you harmed in any way? Did the priest mention what his purpose was in taking you?"

If he can get the child's confidence, he will ask a few follow-up questions, trying to be as diplomatic as possible: "Do you have any special talents? Do you feel a connection to the world around you on a spiritual level? Have you ever done anything you couldn't explain?"

Day 268: More Information

Taylar will calm his anger by comforting the children, offering them food and drink...
Vittero uses his minor skill in Bending to Soothe the adolescent children as Taylar frees them.

GM: Even with the aid of manipulating Way, it takes a few hours for the captives to recover their senses. They all seem a bit lost and nervous after this recovery, having no recollection of their previous movements after their capture. They eat and drink as if ravenous. Other than the hunger, they seem to be no worse for wear. The two girls seem particularly pretty. The three boys well-fit.

Kwargrow said:
Taylar says to the soldier, "You must do as your conscience guides you. We do not have time to guard you. Tell us of any other attacks and potential targets you know about. How long has this gone on?"
[sblock=Negotiate]Mercantile (Commercial) + Clarity (Collegiate) + d100
Negotiation represents the interaction between a character and any other living creature when combat is not ensuing, although extremely clever individuals may attempt to negotiate, even during combat. The outcome of this task may be hindered by a language barrier when dealing with other people or significantly hindered by a lack of cognition when dealing with a mundane animal. Modifications for such are determined at the discretion of the GM.
Taylar: 23 + 18 + 50 = 91[/sblock]
The soldiers seem amicable to answering Taylar's questions, especially with the lack of threat in the interrogation. The answers seem forthright in their delivery.
"This was our first assignment. Acolyte Avery was in charge. He gave the commands. None of us Regulars are involved in any decisions. We are given very little background information. The two woman probably know more... well, knew more. I see you managed to kill them."

Two of the soldiers spit.

"Quite the lookers, those two, but none of us would get caught looking. Creepy, scary they were. They were not commanded like us. The Acolyte spoke quietly to them. They spoke quietly to him... None of this yes sir, no sir, soldiering stuff."

Realizing the rabbit run, he goes back to his original story. "Sorry. We were originally told that word had reached the Illuminated One that outlying communities have begun to profane the Light of Day and the practice of Moon Worship was returning to practice. Avery was probably given more on the subject, but that is what he told us before giving the command to march on the Windward Village."

"We were told that the Lord of the Day was on our side and to put to death any who resists. Those two girls were sent into the village while we made camp. The next morning we could see the girls had returned. We were told that the Village Elder had grossly profaned the Light of Day and that this one lady who lived at the north edge was actively practicing Dark Arts. She and the Elder were to be killed and the woman's house burned. Some of the villagers resisted when we burned the house, screaming about their village healer."

"Avery and the two woman collected those prisoners. We do not know why. After Avery talked to them, they all followed along with him like some bottle-fed lambs."

"We were not yet heading back to Thisidaboga. We were to divert when we reached the other path and head toward the Fishermen's Heights."

Maka searches the dead spies and soldiers, looking for usable equipment...
GM: Maka, being slightly thinner than the Aedaman soldiers, will readily be able to repurpose any of their armor. He or Adisakti could even were the armor of the two female spies, because the average Faethrin male is about the build of an Aedaman female. Only Taylar is too large to wear any of the armor.

Maka finds that the two female spies and the priest are adorned with items not found on the soldiers. He recovers a total of 16 loose tin coins and 8 loose copper coins, 3 bloodstone rings, 2 sunstone brooches, two tiny pouches of herbs, two aluminum pendants stamped out with a blazing sun emblem, and one copper teardrop pendant.

Tellerian Hawke said:

GM: The soldiers all carried small wooden shields, which are larger and sturdier than the chitin buckler. The reinforced bracers and greaves worn by the spies appear to be better than those made from chitin.

OOC: I will edit your character record to reflect this collection. If other players wish to acquire or exchange items, it must be stated in a post.

Tellerian Hawke said:

GM: The weaponry is not of a better quality, but extra arrows are always beneficial.

Tellerian Hawke said:
Maka also makes a search for valuables and trinkets, paying special attention to any items which might have any proclivity of Way.
[sblock=Alchemical Sensitivity]Mercantile (Commercial) + Analysis (Collegiate) + d100
This determines if a mineral, ore, plant, or piece of an animal is tuned to a particular proclivity of Way lines, meaning that the item may be used to enhance the manipulation of Way or augment the developmental abilities of its bearer. For a positive result the effectiveness of Sensitivity must be equal to or exceed rarity * (d100). Rarity is determined by the GM or by using the availability tables located in the Denizens and Collectibles sections.
Maka: 27 + 19 + 50 = 96[/sblock]
GM: Maka is able to sense that the bloodstone rings and sunstone brooches are tuned. Realizing such, he suspects that the other items will be as well, but he cannot sense it.

Tellerian Hawke said:

[sblock=Negotiation]Maka: 27(mercantile) + 19(clarity) + 50(d100) = 96[/sblock]
One of the boys answers Maka, "Before we left the village, we were bound by those two scary woman. That priest said something about clarity coming through depravity and that we should feel honored to have been selected to be in service to The Light. I do not remember anything after that until you freed us. I don't think any of us were hurt."

The others shake their heads.

Tellerian Hawke said:
If he can get the child's confidence, he will ask..."Do you have any special talents? Do you feel a connection to the world around you on a spiritual level? Have you ever done anything you couldn't explain?"
All the children, at first, seem to not understand the line of questioning. They all shake their heads. One of the girls then says, "I don't know, maybe. Do you think that is why we were taken?"

GM: In the same manner by which he is able to sense the proclivity of the items, Maka can sense that both girls have the rudimentary talent to manipulate Way. He senses nothing from the boys.

While all this is going on, Raven Elk nudges Adi (if he is willing) and says; "We can get armor and better weapons later. Help me go through the priest's tent, and let's see what he was about by finding his priestly implements and other accoutrements; especially if we can find texts, it may help us know more about this Lord of the Day cult."
Adi replies, "Let's on with it. Yea, you being raised by your ma, as she is and not having been around main town and Vittero's pa so much, you still don't know. Daylight is the official religion. Vittero's pa, our priest, is a Priest of the Dawn. Well, that's the daughter of Day so it's like a faction of the same religion. Maka's people are completely different. They have their own names and customs, but I see the whole concept as basically the same. So, pretty much everybody worships the Lord of the Day, at least everybody that lives in the villages or the city. I think this cleansing crap is lie. I think his Lollyness wants to usurp the power to rule from the king, by force if necessary, using religion as his excuse."
GM: The first thing that catches their attention upon entering the large canvass tent is the cot set off to one side. It seems the man in charge did not have to sleep upon the ground. Toward the back of the tent is a small table and chair. Upon the table is a bound book, some loose paper, a glass oil lamp with no oil and no wick, an ink vial and a quill, and a birdcage containing a live pigeon, which coos when the flap opens.

The book contains writing in the Thisidan language and appears to be a ledger and journal. One small parchment scroll contains the beginnings of a report. Underneath the cot, there is a small chest, about 1/2 an arm in all dimensions. The chest is locked with a typical key-cam-lever system bond within metal straps. The chest can readily be broken open but it would be better to find the key.

The key appears to be the paper weight upon the loose parchment. The cut stone disc has a raised pattern on one of its flat sides that fits into the lock. Opening the chest reveals a variety of coins, rudimentary trinkets, a few indigenous idols, and three tiny pouches. Each tiny pouch contains a measure of dried herbs, each different in aroma.

While Raven Elk and Adisakti enter Acolyte Avery's tent to search his personal belongings, Vittero decides to go through the supply wagons.

GM: Vittero tallies a total of four suits of full padded armor for an average sized Aedman and two suit of the same for an Aedman female, counting the one Maka is going to repurpose. There are six small wooden shields, since even the soldiers who ran dropped theirs, and four shortswords, counting the one Taylar acquired. There are three knives, two recurve bows, and 31 arrows.

He finds barrels of water, saltpork, some fresh vegetables, bread cakes, and iron cookware and utensils in a four-wheel wagon pulled by two donkeys.

Vittero motions Taylar and Maka over to the priest's tent where Raven Elk and Adisakti are, already. "We don't really need these basic supplies. I am thinking we send one wagon, the supplies, and the tents back with the villagers and those four dupes, while we keep the other wagon and the weapons. what say you?"
