The Markidian suddenly becomes much more difficult to focus on, as if the eyes of the viewer want to simply slip by. Taylar instantly recognizes that the man has the same mystical talent as his own. The man then nearly skewers Adisakti; but for the protective bearskin, he would have. The man attempts to shield bash Taylar, but the effort is ineffective.

Taylar gets passed the shield and cracks the man in the chest with one of his bludgeons. The leather armor saves a broken bone, but some of the wind is still knocked out of the man.

Having acquired the man's focus with his first sword swing, Adisakti cannot make contact with his second.

Using a bit of itch weed, Raven Elk increases the man's injury by making his body seem to eat away at him from the inside.

The man is not fairing so well against three competent foes. There is yet no sign that the girls are aware of the battle.

Despite the obvious talent of the Markidian soldier, he is not match against three. Alternating his attention and attacks, he manages to block the mighty bludgeon blow from Taylar, despite its added luck. This leaves him vulnerable to the saber from Adisakti, which incapacitates him.

In the course of the final volley of assaults, Taylar takes more damage to his bracers but is unharmed. Adisaki takes a full on shield bash and is knocked backward three strides, having some of the wind knocked from him, despite having skewered the Markidian, who then falls to the ground. The man is still conscious even though his mind is a bit further dazed due to the mystical assault of Raven Elk.

In the quiet aftermath of the heated battle, it sounds as if someone is approaching the scene. The most likely resultant is the six Daughter of Dawn who are in training.

Taylar intends to smash the Markidian's face with a bludgeon to make sure he never rises. He motions to the Outliers to hide themselves again and will stay in the open to receive whoever is approaching, trusting his comrades to intervene if there is another fight. Taylar hopes the newcomers will take him for a brute like the Markidian did.

The Markidian's skull breaks with a hollow cracking sound like snapping a large twig. It is certain no life remains in him. Raven Elk remains in his hidden location. Adisakti fades back into the trees, again seeking cover and discards his completely useless tunic, it having sustained too much damage for structural integrity.

A few quiet moments reveals that it is the six trainees who emerge from cover. The six girls are a few cycles younger than the Outliers. They are not properly fitted for battle and two are still carrying shovels. Seeing the instructor on the ground at Taylar's feet, one girl begins to yell at him. She is most likely the leader of the group. She is not looking at Taylar when she speaks. She is looking at the fallen corpse. Her mannerism indicates that she is venting, unaware that she can be understood. The six continue to move forward, passing the hidden location of Raven Elk.

"What have you done!? Who are you? Why kill our instructor? You think we are prisoner here!?"

One of the other girls mumbles something, indistinguishable at the distance. The speaker ceases talking and glares back at her. When she turns back and actually looks Taylar in the face from a distance of about 10 strides, the other girls move, haltingly, to form a semi-circle. The body language of all suggests that they are gauging the situation and running calculations in their heads.

Taylar notes that they are not without weaponry. Small knives can be seen secured about various places on all of their bodies. The girls seem to be debating with themselves over duty and preservation.

Taylar does not lower his guard. He decides not to attempt any deception, and says to these girls in the same language they spoke, "This man was only teaching you to be murderers and home stealers. We have seen groups like yours attack people and destroy them for not following their beliefs. My allies and I will not allow this to continue. You may leave here now, in peace, but if you continue on this path, it will lead to your destruction, either by my hand or another."

Uncharacteristic yet feeling compelled to do so, Raven Elk reveals himself from his hidden location behind the girls and adds to the words of Taylar. "Look at me. What do you see? I was born a Kinamin, a people of known maleficence, and yet here I stand, peaceably in my own mind, friend of the Maldrog to whom you speak. We know you were kidnapped as small girls. You are being used. Reject this course of action and live."

The girls are stunned to silence, not only by the fluency of their own language but by the gravity of the words. The lead girl starts to respond but only stammers. Shaking her head to build her rage, she barks orders for the other girls to fan out and attack. To the Outliers, the girls are badly outmatched, but they will likely avoid melee, since undertaking a foolhardy assault. Each man being taller and faster, Taylar instantly deduces that he can run down one target at a time, if he so chooses.

Four of the girls move, but the two in the back simply stand where they are, making no hostile movement. One of whom was carrying a shovel drops it.

Taylar tries again, but still in a defensive posture. "You owe no allegiance to the dead. Your teacher attacked first and paid with his life. Leave here now, or if you wish, we have a place you can go to find your own way in life. The teachers there will not force you to perform useless tasks to break your will."
