Two 20s, no 1s - how often do you use altered dice?

I mostly DM, and sometimes fudge the rolls to help the party. My rolls are usually behind the DM-screen, so the players never know if I fudge rolls or not. I'd say on average, I fudge maybe 1 roll per session, with none per some sessions and multiples in others balancing it out. I don't see a problem with this, since it's being done for the good of the party and/or story. Rarely ever have I fudged to help a monster, and then if I do, it's usually minor.

As a player, I have never intentionally cheated on a roll. I know I've caught myself making mistakes in finding the final numbers by forgetting that a certain bonus did or didn't apply, but it wasn't intentional and I would not call that cheating.

I assume my players don't cheat. All their rolls are exposed so they'd need to be using loaded dice of some kind to pull it off. I've seen each of them roll 1's at the worst of times, so I suspect they are using normal dice. If I would catch someone cheating, I'd give them a lecture and ask them either play honestly or quit the group.

Good gravy, what a bunch of hypocrites we have amongst us gamers.

Me? - I'd "eject" myself immediately from a gaming group if the DM forced another player away for cheating. That angry knee-jerk reaction is just close-minded pettiness dressed up as righteous indignation, and I'd not want to associate with people who cannot accept the shortfalls of another human being.

Well since you were likely the one cheating in the first place you wouldn't be able to put on your little display.

Is the occasional roll of 1 such a horrible notion to you that you'd suck away what fun everyone else at the table was having because refuse you fail?

Hypocrites or not your lack of maturity is frightening.

And just remember what they used to do in Vegas if they caught you cheating... and pray gamers don't take up the same habits.

So please don't sit there spouting your amoral dribble and not expect to be challenged.

Henry - it won't help, anymore. Now, I'm just going to start using 'em on you at random, whether I think you're up to something or not. Bwah ha ha ha ha!

Yeah, but you don't have to yell "CLEAR!" with such glee every time, either. :)

Well, given that I have a nice job, several very good friends, a hot wife, and success in many of my hobbies, my self-esteem is such that I don't feel a driving need to cheat in order to win at a roleplaying game I play with my buddies once a week. Whatever floats your boat, though.

And the rest of you, please remember this handy little memory-aid:

Trolls are flaccid,
Use fire and acid.

The DM "fudges" his rolls all the time in the glorified name of a "good game." ... "Do as I say, not as I do?"

There is a difference - the DM may fudge to keep the drama and excitement high for his campaign but the DM's 'cheating' (as you would probably call it) is for the benefit of the game and therefore, the players.

A player cheating is only cheating to benefit himself.

I as a DM, is probably one of the few who rolls openly and the dice fall how they will.

We could go around and around with this - but you originated the thread and seem to have an issue with those who consider using 'cheating' dice just WRONG and not defensible under any circumstance. You asked the question..... but you seem not to like some of the answers.

Again, you are wrong. Most DMs do not do this. If everyone is cherating like yo claim, why even have dice? Just say your character hits.

Games have rules. Playing within the rules is expected at most gaming tables. Just because you claim that we all cheat, doesn't make it so.

Okey dokey, the jokes are fine, but no calling each other "hypocrites" or talking about "amoral dribble." Keep it humorous, or keep it zipped.

Or, of course, keep it serious and respectful: there's plenty of room in this thread for a serious conversation about cheating.

My DM is pretty generous with the giving of Hero Points-- and, instead of fudging the dice, I just cushion my most important rolls with the additions provided by those points.
This way, I don't really ever have to use an altered die or fake my rolls... it's a nice tool.
