Two New Monsters, Template & Magic Item (Players Stay Out!)

In hopes I might actually use these in a homebrew adventure, Diaglo, Olgar, JoeBlank, Biorph, and all others in the Banewarrens or OD&D group, PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS THREAD.

I thought we could use another introduction (if anyone is following along). The 3 creature types came out better than I expected. And I even like the current magic item rules. Prices, CRs and general balancing is still mostly based off of MM and Grim Tales systems. And they are still a bit fuzzy to me. These would certainly need playtesting.

That said, I do have more surprises in store. So keep a lookout.

(the meat)
As a companion piece to Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments, I came up with another item he may have created: Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions. Similar to the pigments, the emulsions can create any nonvaluable object as well. Except these objects are always intelligent. Moreover, creatures of any type can also be create; both real and imagined (within the campaign world).

Anyways, what I am desiging is: the magic item/artifact "Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions", a template for typical creatures created "Painted Creature", a new monster for completely original creatures created (based off the Astral Construct model) "Invented Paint Creature", and a new monster for intelligent objects created (based off of the Animated Object model) "Animated Paint Object" .

I am going off the assumption that intelligences created would have instinctual knowledge (i.e. spell-like abilities, speech, attacks, etc). What they would not have at their creation would be Skills and Feats. However, creatures capable of advancing either by class or HD could learn skills and feats from that point forward. While "advanced" HD creatures could be created (simply by painting them larger or feircer, but still w/o skills or feats), classes could not be generated initially. For example, an advanced 21HD treant could be painted from scratch, but Troll Hunter, 6th level ranger could not. The painted Troll would need to take the class levels after it was created (painted).

For your review, here are the details for Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments:

Marvelous Pigments: These magic emulsions enable their possessor to create actual, permanent objects simply by depicting their form in two dimensions. The pigments are applied by a stick tipped with bristles, hair, or fur. The emulsion flows from the application to form the desired object as the artist concentrates on the desired image. One pot of marvelous pigments is sufficient to create a 1,000-cubic-foot object by depicting it two-dimensionally over a 100-square-foot surface.
Only normal, inanimate objects can be created. Creatures can’t be created. The pigments must be applied to a surface. It takes 10 minutes and a DC 15 Craft (painting) check to depict an object with the pigments. Marvelous pigments cannot create magic items. Objects of value depicted by the pigments —precious metals, gems, jewelry, ivory, and so on— appear to be valuable but are really made of tin, lead, paste, brass, bone, and other such inexpensive materials. The user can create normal weapons, armor, and any other mundane item (including foodstuffs) whose value does not exceed 2,000 gp.

Items created are not magical; the effect is instantaneous.

Strong conjuration; CL 15th; Craft Wondrous Item, major creation; Price 4,000 gp.

Questions:
- The Construct traits don't really match up with the fact that the paint becomes the substance painted.
- The template CR HD adjustment is a guess. Level adjustment is a guess.
- Some Special Attacks are also considered Monster only feats. Yet are not listed in the feat section of the statblock. Do they still qualify as learned behavior?
- No Supernatural or Spell-Like abilities are given to invented creatures or objects. Should I remove Su and Sp abilities from the template creatures too? Could the template still be uniform then?
- Intelligence for templated creatures is always at least 1. Invented creatures and objects receive 10 in all "mental" abilities. Should this hold true for templated creatures too?
- The Emergent Emulsions magic item cost is based off of summoning spells. It is loosely priced as creatures with challenge ratings up to 24 could potentially be created.

Conjecture:
Based upon the descripton, magic items cannot be created. But in order for an object to be intelligent, it must also be a permanent magical item. I would prefer magic items not be possible to create with the emulsions or they would be vastly overpowered. So maybe this could be an exception to the intelligent magic item rule? Maybe they could simply be continual lighted objects? Or have a permanent Nystul's magical aura?

On the other hand however, I would like creatures to be able to be generated with all their special abilities, including magical ones, so the "no magic" rule doesn't hold up in all cases. Why could a magical creature be created, but a magical item could not be?

Template

Painted Creature

A painted creature is actually made up of the substances the paint depicts, but not any of great value. A "painted" human would look a portrait come to life in three dimensions. The brushstrokes would be visible, but its flesh would react like normal flesh when cut. The blood spurting out would also appear to be painted on wherever it fell; moreover it would appear painted even while gushing through the air. A creature made up of valueable materials, like a crystal golem, would appear like a painting of the creature, but its actual composition reacts as a lesser valuable material.

Creating a Painted Creature

"Painted Creature" is an inherited template that can be added to any visible, corporeal creature. Creatures made of valuable objects (such as precious metals, gems, or jewelry) would appear to be be created. A painted creature uses all of the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type: The creature's type changes to Construct. Do not recalculate the creature's Hit Dice, base attack bonus, or saves. Size is unchanged. Painted creatures are intelligent constructs.
Armor Class: Natural Armor class may change depending on if the creature's substance changes. See the nonvaluable special quality below.
Special Qualities: Construct traits, nonvaluable, vulnerabilities
Abilities: Int raised to 1 minimum
Skills: — (skills can be gained through advancement)

Feats: — (feats can be gained through advancement)
Challenge Rating: (for constructs) +0; (for non-constructs) HD 8 or less, as base creature +1; HD 9 to 14, as base creature +0; HD 15 or more, as base creature -1.
Alignment: Usually Neutral
Advancement: As the base creature. See text
Level Adjustment: +2

Advancement as a "painted" creature:

Painted creatures are wholely constructed and are not grown like other intelligent constructs. They contain no knowledge at creation, but basic instincts and a single language (normally Common). They have the cognitive abilities reflected in their scores, but lack any memory. Painted creatures are capable of gaining knowledge through advancement.

Class level advancement is treated normally with feat and skill increases beginning with the first level taken. HD advancement is treated normally as well, but the first HD earned after the creature's creation also counts as it's first in regards to skills and feat increases. HD+3 - (HD at creation)

Special Qualities:

Nonvaluable. Base creatures which are made up of valuable materials keep the appearance of their true form. Their actual material is of the closest nonvaluable substance allowed. For instance, crystal creatures would be made of normal metal and golden creatures of normal stone. The creature's statistics relating to its substance (like Natural Armor) are changed to the new material's characteristics.

Construct Traits: A construct possesses the following traits:
 • No Constitution score.
 • Low-light vision.
 • Darkvision out to 60 feet.
 • Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
 • Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease , death effects, and necromancy effects.
 • Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
 • Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
 • Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
 • Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
 • Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected.
 • Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the following table.
Construct Size Bonus Hit Points:

Fine — ; Diminutive — ; Tiny — ; Small 10 ; Medium 20 ; Large 30 ; Huge 40 ; Gargantuan 60 ; Colossal 80
 • Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry.
 • Proficient with no armor.
 • Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe. [or procreate]
Vulnerability to Acid: Painted Creatures take half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from acid, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Vulnerability to Paint Remover & Universal Solvent: Painted Creatures treat paint removing chemicals as acid (1d6 damage). Universal Solvent deals 1d6 permanent Constitution damage.

Monster 1

Invented Paint Creature

Invented painted creatures are depictions of creatures that never existed. (and for use when no existing monster is applicable) They look like creatures of fancy painted and come to life in three dimensions. Brushstrokes are visible upon them, yet all other qualities of their form are like normal creatures. An invented painted creature which is made up of valuable materials like diamond or platinum only appears painted to be so. Its actual substance is of a lesser valuable material.

Invented Painted Creatures act according to their own desires and not the necessarily the will of their creators. After creation, their alignment can shift away from neutral according to the rules for normal alignment change.

An invented painted creature generally appears as an animated painting with the default shape as humanoid. However, near any shape or size is possible to create.

Creating a Painted Construct
When painting with Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions, the painter portrays the desired creature from a menu of choices, as specified in the construct's statistics block. A painter can always substitute two choices from a lesser menu for one of its given abilities. Multiple selections of the same menu choice do not stack unless the ability specifically notes that stacking is allowed.

Painted Construct Menu A

Blindsense (Ex)
The painted construct has blindsense out to 20 feet.

Burrow (Ex)
The painted construct gains a burrowing speed of 30 feet in soft earth (not stone).

Damage Type (Ex)
Each separate appendage's attack gains a damage type of bludgeoning, slashing, or piercing. They can be all of one type or any combination of types.

Energy Resistance (Ex)
Choose one of the following energy types: fire, cold, electricity, or sonic. The painted construct gains resistance 5 against that energy type.

Lesser Deflection (Ex)
The painted construct gains a +1 deflection bonus to Armor Class.

Lesser Fly (Ex)
The painted construct has physical wings and a fly speed of 20 feet (average).

Lesser Hardiness (Ex)
The painted construct gains an extra 5 hit points.

Multilegged (Ex)
Instead of two legs, the painted construct has from ten to none. Extra legs do not gain extra attacks.

Scent (Ex)
The painted construct gains the scent ability.

Speed (Ex)
The painted construct’s land speed is increased by 10 feet.

Swim (Ex)
The painted construct gains a swim speed of 30 feet.

Tremorsense (Ex)
The painted construct gains the tremorsense ability out to 60 feet.

Painted Construct Menu B

By trading in a single Menu B ability, two Menu A abilities may be assigned to a painted construct instead.

Damage Reduction (Ex)
The painted construct’s surface forms a hard carapace and provides an additional 3 points of damage reduction (or damage reduction 3/magic if it does not already have damage reduction).

Deflection (Ex)
The painted construct gains a +4 deflection bonus to Armor Class.

Energy Touch (Ex)
The painted construct’s made up of an energy type (fire, cold, electricity, or sonic). Touch attacks deal an extra 1d6 points of designated energy damage.

Extra Attacking Appendage (Ex)
The painted construct gains one extra slam attack when it makes a full attack. Its bonus on damage rolls for each attack is equal to its Strength modifier, not its Strength modifier × 1½.

Fast Healing (Ex)
The painted construct heals 2 hit points each round. It is still immediately destroyed when it reaches 0 hit points.

Fly (Ex)
The painted construct has physical wings and a fly speed of 40 feet (average).

Frightful Presence (Ex)
The painted construct gains the frightful presence ability out to 30 feet.

Hardiness (Ex)
The painted construct gains an extra 15 hit points.

Improved Grab (Ex)
To use this ability, the construct must hit with its slam attack. A construct can use this ability only on a target that is at least one size smaller than itself.

Improved Swim (Ex)
The painted construct gains a swim speed of 60 feet.

Muscle (Ex)
The painted construct gains a +4 bonus to its Strength score.

Poison Attack (Ex)
If the painted construct hits with a melee attack, the target must make an initial Fortitude save (DC 10 + ½ painted construct’s HD + painted construct’s Cha modifier) or take 1 point of Constitution damage. One minute later, the target must save again or take 1d2 points of Constitution damage.

Pounce (Ex)
If the painted construct charges a foe, it can make a full attack.

Trample (Ex)
As a standard action during its turn each round, a Large or larger painted construct can literally run over an opponent at least one size smaller than itself. It merely has to move over the opponent to deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d8 + its Str modifier. The target can attempt a Reflex save (DC 10 + ½ painted construct’s Hit Dice + painted construct’s Str modifier) to negate the damage, or it can instead choose to make an attack of opportunity at a –4 penalty.

Painted Construct Menu C

By trading in a single Menu C ability, two Menu B abilities or four Menu A abilities may be assigned to a painted construct instead.

Blindsight (Ex)
The painted construct has blindsight out to 60 feet.

Constrict (Ex)
The painted construct has the improved grab ability with its slam attack. In addition, on a successful grapple check, the painted construct deals damage equal to its slam damage.

Greater Deflection (Ex)
The painted construct gains a +8 deflection bonus to Armor Class.

Greater Hardiness (Ex)
The painted construct gains an extra 30 hit points.

Improved Damage Reduction (Ex)
The painted construct’s surface has hard, armor-like plates and provides an additional 6 points of damage reduction.

Improved Fast Healing (Ex)
The painted construct heals 5 hit points each round. It is still immediately destroyed when it reaches 0 hit points.

Improved Poison Attack (Ex)
If the painted construct hits with a melee attack, the target must make an initial Fortitude save (DC 12 + ½ painted construct’s HD + painted construct’s Cha modifier) or take 1d3 point of Constitution damage. One minute later, the target must save again or take 1d6 points of Constitution damage.

Rend (Ex)
A medium sized or large painted construct makes claw attacks instead of slam attacks (it deals the same amount of damage as it would with its slam damage, but does slashing damage instead of bludgeoning damage). The painted construct that hits the same opponent with two claw attacks in the same round rends its foe, which deals extra damage equal to 2d6 + 1½ times its Str modifier.

Second Extra Attacking Appendage (Ex)
The painted construct gains a second extra slam attack when it makes a full attack. Its bonus on damage rolls for each attack is equal to its Strength modifier, not its Strength modifier × 1½. This can only be added to a creature with the Extra Attacking Appendage ability.

Spell Resistance (Ex)
The painted construct gains spell resistance equal to 10 + its Hit Dice.

Swallow Whole (Ex)
A painted construct of Large size or more gains the ability to swallow some opponents whole.

Animated Paint Object

An animated paint creature is actually made up of the substances the paint depicts, but not any of great value. A "painted" bucket of water would look a picture of a bucket of water on canvas cut out to the bucket of water's shape. Only every angle views the bucket of water as a two dimensional object facing them. So all animated paint objects hold true to three diminsions, but appear as two.
The brushstrokes used to paint the bucket of water are visible as such. But instead of having the consistency of paint, the wooden bucket would react as wood and the water as water. An object made of valueable material, like a diamond ring, would appear like a painting of the object, but its actual composition would actually be of a lesser valuable material.

Animated paint objects come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. They are created with Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions. Unlike normal animated objects, animated paint objects are intelligent. Unfortunately, they most cannot grow or advance by class types to learn feats and skills. If a DM feels a particular object has enough ability to manipulate its environment and learn, feel free to allow appropriate advancement.

Each object gains the special qualities below.

Telepathy (Su)
Animated Paint Object cannot speak like normal creatures. Communication is telepathic and requires all listeners to be in contact with the Paint Object. Only one language is known (normally Common).

Vulnerability to Acid (Ex)
Painted Creatures take half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from acid, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Vulnerability to Paint Remover & Universal Solvent (Ex)
Painted Creatures treat paint removing chemicals as acid (1d6 damage). Universal Solvent deals 1d6 permanent Constitution damage.

Nonvaluable (Ex)
Base creatures which are made up of valuable materials keep the appearance of their true form. Their actual material is of the closest nonvaluable substance allowed. For instance, crystal creatures would be made of normal metal and golden creatures of normal stone. The creature's statistics relating to its substance (like Natural Armor) are changed to the new material's characteristics.

Special Attacks

An animated paint object may have one or more of the following special attack forms, depending on its form.

Blind (Ex)
A sheetlike animated paint such as a carpet or tapestry can grapple an opponent up to three sizes larger than itself. The paint makes a normal grapple check. If it wins, it wraps itself around the opponent’s head, causing that creature to be blinded until removed.

Constrict (Ex)
A flexible animated paint such as a rope, vine, or rug deals damage equal to its slam damage value plus 1- ½ times its Strength bonus with a successful grapple check against a creature up to one size larger than itself.
A painted object of at least Large size can make constriction attacks against multiple creatures at once, if they all are at least two sizes smaller than the paint and can fit under it.

Hardness (Ex)
An animated paint object has the same hardness it had before it was animated.

Improved Speed (Ex)
The base land speed given in the statistics block assume that an animated paint object lurches, rocks, or slithers along.
Paint objects with two legs (statues, ladders) or a similar shape that allows faster movement have a +10 foot bonus to speed. paints with multiple legs (tables, chairs) have a +20 foot bonus to speed. Wheeled paint objects have a +40 foot bonus to speed.
Animated paint objects might have additional modes of movement. A wooden paint object can float and has a swim speed equal to half its land speed. A rope or similar sinuous paint object has a climb speed equal to half its land speed. A sheetlike paint object can fly (clumsy maneuverability) at half its normal speed.

Trample (Ex)
An animated paint object of at least Large size and with a hardness of at least 10 can trample creatures two or more sizes smaller than itself, dealing damage equal to the paint object's slam damage + 1½ times its Strength bonus. Opponents who do not make attacks of opportunity against the paint object can attempt Reflex saves (DC 10 + ½ paint object’s HD + paint’s Str modifier) to halve the damage.

Magic Item

Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions

Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions: These magic paints enable their possessor to create actual, permanent intelligent creatures and animated intelligent objects simply by depicting their form in two dimensions. The pigments are applied by a paintbrush or equivalent bristle tipped stick. The emulsion flows from the applicator to form the desired object or creature as the artist concentrates on the desired image. One pot of marvelous pigments is sufficient to create a 125-cubic-foot object by depicting it two-dimensionally over a 25-square-foot surface.

The emulsions must be applied to a surface. It takes 1 day (8 hours) minimum of work to depict an animated intelligent object or intelligent creature with the pigments. Emergent Emulsions cannot create magic items. Objects of great value depicted by the pigments —precious metals, gems, jewelry, ivory, and so on— appear to be valuable but are often made of tin, lead, paste, brass, bone, and other such inexpensive materials as long as their total value does not exceed 20,000gp. The user can create normal weapons, armor, and any other mundane item (including foodstuffs) up to this same value.

Objects depicted by the emulsions use the Animated Paint Object monster rules. Their abilities are determined by size and partially according to the actual object depicted. Created creatures that already exist in the campaign world gain the Painted Creature template. Creatures that are wholly new and have no published equivalent are created using the Invented Paint Creature guidelines.

The work requires a Craft(paint) check made each day against a DC 15 normally or a DC 25 to duplicate a specific individual. Progress is determined using the Craft skill rules with the item price equaling the intended creature or object's HD x 100, the DC multiplier equaling its challenge rating subracted from 25, and the material costs according to its size. One jar of Nolzur's emergent emulsions can create 20 diminutive, 4 tiny, 2 small, or 1 medium creature or object. Large sizes require 4 jars, Huge 9, Gargantuan 16, and Colossal 25.

For example, a drow elf created with the Painted Creature template would use the Craft(paint) DC 15 (unless it was a specific individual). The skill check (10) multiplied by 23 (25-2) equals 230. Since the cost equals 100sp (1HD x 100), crafting time would take only one day.

The items and creatures created are not inherently magical from their creation; the effect is instantaneous.

Strong conjuration; CL 20th; Craft Wondrous Item, major creation, greater planar binding; Price 60,000 gp.

Wow! visitors.

Nolzur's Emergent Emulsions create a living, intelligent version of whatever is possible to be painted. So, I have animal, vegetable, and mineral. Known creatures are any creatures already existent in the game world. Invented creatures are those that are not. A few differences exist between them (like telepathy for animated objects so they can communicate) and these may need more symmetry.

Any help in balancing these little creations would be appreciated. The whole task is a little beyond me, but I have been working on it a piece at a time. There are a few rules I am breaking regarding skills and feats, but the rest has been slightly less difficult.

Can anyone spot any problems?
