Two-Weapon Fighting

Too bad guys standing in the middle of a group in full defense do not provide flanking anymore...

Source? They can't make Attacks of Opportunity, but that's not the same thing as not threatening an area...

Two weapon wielding is a sub-optimal choice for a straight-up fighter. Which (IMO) is as it should be. A rogue fighting with two weapons is more likely to cause greater damage than a Fighter two-weapon wielder, assuming he can get the flank in.

You can't compare a two-hander, with a two-weapon wielder as everything about those two characters will be different according to how they optimize the different styles. This is from how they chose to assign stats to their scores, to the equipment they puchase, the feats they choose, and the classes/PrC they pick up on the way. You cannot assume stats will be the same, because this imposes a limitation which a player would not have to abide to. Nor can you invalidate a whole fighting style just because it provides far more benefit to the rogue than the straight fighter.

The sword and board is already sub-optimal in the long term, due to the existance of the animated shield. If you go this route, you are sacrificing long term power for short term survival (not a bad thing, but a choice you need to aware of).

I think animated shields are totally ridiculous. A 3 month old retarded monkey could tell you why it was a bad idea. Sword and shield was already barely viable, and then they have to go and make this enchantment that totally makes it obsolete? Stupid stupid stupid. Any game I DM is going to have that enchantment immediately houseruled into oblivion.

Joe, there is a feat that allows you to use two weapons in one strike in a standard action. It is in the Everquest RPG PH. I forget the exact details beyond that. I'm not sure if they count as one blow for str, sneak attack and attack roll, just an extra set of base weapon damage.

I saw something like this proposed on here not too long ago, and put forth the idea again in a House Rules thread. I like the idea, and it could go far to improve TWF versatility as compared to 2 Handed Weapons. I figure it makes sense if you count both weapons swung as one large weapon, dealing the combined damage of both, so you'd get 1.5X strength and 2/1 power attack. You'd also have the 2 weapon penalties to hit, and attacking like this would encompas both the on-hand and off-hand attacks at that Base Attack Bonus that round. I'd even let you make one attack, with both weapons, as a standard action, to make Spring Attack a viable option again. I'd also say that sneak attack is applied only once, but the bonuses to damage from each weapon stack, like magic, specialization, favored enemy...

I agree with the Anti-Animated Sheld sentiment. I think it's silly to throw something in that makes a perviously slightly sub-par fighting style completely useless.

Oh well.. Good thread. Been watching a while. Good to see this topic getting some attention. and if you're still interested, check out that houserule thread Darklone and Hypersmurf mentioned.

We could open an anti animated shield thread. I'm sure many guys would sign a petition to WotC ;)

All DMs I know personally don't allow them.

You can fight with a weapon in each hand. You can make one extra attack each round with the second weapon.

Funny, when I read the intepretation I immediately had visions of player's using the same argument to be allowed to make the extra attack when they are:

1. held
2. unconscious
3. pinned
4. sleeping
5. dead

Talkin' about breaking the rules :D

Well, that's obviously better than a feat. :)

Seriously, the text on the feat is stupid since you don't need a feat to fight with two weapons. The text hasn't changed from 3.0 to 3.5 it was inaccurate then and is inaccurate now.

You are forgetting how another rule affects the TWF feat.

The GM is always right.
The GM is always right
The GM is always right.

So simple really

:D
