Two Weeks and Counting -- November 2nd!

This should be a great upgrade. I'm so-so on the new theme, but the underlying technology has me excited. It sounds like it will really move things forward.

I know, I know, I'm such a geek. :P

Huh, that's typical! For years, you deny that you're working on a new edition, and then you spring it on us out of the blue! Foul, I say! New technologies? What's that for? Limited compatibility with my 5 years old stuff? You're trying to chase me away, right?

What...we're not talking 4E?

Seriously, the new layout looks brilliant in the truest sense of the word (even though I DO like the light text/dark background setting of ENWorld right now, too), and what you mentioned about the tech working beneath it sounds very promising...I just hope I'll make it through the transition time without too many withdrawal symptoms showing up. Also hope my account will migrate without problems, I got so attached to it. ;) Great news overall! :D

Sorry to say it, but the new skin is most unpleasant. Dark text on a light background may be good, but not when the background is this bright (and I'm looking at it on a monitor tuned for subdued colour). (I've been working in IT for 16 years and have been staring at computer screens since 1983, so I guess I have a fair idea of what I'm talking about.)

Redesign looks good. Colors suck.

Black text on white or gray background is good. On shades of orange and yellow? Not so good.

How about browsing via an iPhone? Gaming sites are locked down, at work, so I browse with my phone.
I haven't found a page that rendered badly via iPhone/iPod touch yet, just many that load slowly.

Yes, but will there be gnomes in the new edition of EN World?

I do hope there'll still be a dark skin eventually. After reading the article about how much electricity would be saved by Google using a black background instead of a white one, I find I prefer leaving my screen mostly dark.
Hear, hear to both of these. Heck, let's have a dark skin with gnomes on it!

The upgrade will not be easy or short. It's been 3 years and we're behind. Also my recent mistake with the mv command has seriously damaged the code infrastructure of the site. Friday November 2nd the development forum will be activated at a preview URL. All of it's forums will be locked except for meta. A two week shakedown process will be begun to try to level out any remaining issues with the board. If all goes according to plan the final transfer will occur November 16th - 18th (ENWorld is likely to be down that entire weekend). After this if necessary the old site will remain up for around 6 weeks as an archive.
So, are threads getting transferred to the new version, or will they have to be recreated? I'm most concerned with my own threads and the various story hour threads I read.

Light text on a dark field is extremely rare for a reason, it's hard on the eyes, especially once you get used to dark text on a light field.

Actually, I find just the opposite... light text on a dark field is *easy* on my eyes, whereas light backgrounds, especially bright ones, give me bad eye fatigue when I've been reading them for a while. One of the reasons I like reading these forums now is because I can read lots of posts without getting an eyeache.

So... apologies, but chalk me up as someone else who finds the bright orange/yellow in the preview kind of eye-bleeding (plus orange is my least favorite color from an aesthetic perspective), and hopes there's an alternative dark scheme soon. :/

Peace & Luv, Liz

I know the Midwood Story Hour is the primary concern for all ENWorld readers ( :p ), so you'll all be happy to know it's saved in a Word file per adventure, and can be reposted almost instantly if we suffer another thread-eating board meltdown.

(Hmmm, I should really archive my pbp games, though.)
