Naw, Ru Paul uses it all the time on his show to describe himself and others. I think it's a point of contention within the community as well as outside it.

The first time I heard the "Tr. . ." word, my cousin was telling me about how he was planning to pull the "transmission" out of an automobile. In the 1960s. (That's what that word meant way back then: "transmission.")
