If anyone can help me with a puzzle on this game I would appreciate it.

I am stuck in the "murderworld" part of the game. there is a "test of strength" bell I need to open. I know that I need to hit the bell with the hammer which is near the bell but I have done this (with several of my heroes) and cant seem to do it. I have hit "X" spot. Is this just extremely sensitive to where I hit it? Am I missing something?

I've played that game a bit, but not that part. I think it wasn't particularly sensitive about where you hit triggers, but remember some characters are stronger than others. Do you have any of the REALLY strong guys, like Thing or Thor? If it's not that, then I bet there's something you're missing. Do you need to power up the swing? Look for "mash this button" graphics when you're trying to ring the bell.

here's what the FAQ say

Go back to the spot where you saw the ring-the-bell game. Inside the nearby
tent is a hammer. It's laying on the ground and glowing. Step near it and
press USE to pick it up. Now use a fully-charged SMASH ATTACK on the ring-
the-bell game. The gate behind the game will open.


Now I have a the hammer but I am not sure what a "fully-charged" attack means? any ideas

Dunno what system you're playing on, but on the PS2, the circle button (IIRC) is a chargable attack. It basically comes off as a lunge in actual use, but you can hold it to get a bigger boost.

Of the four buttons on the PS2, you have Grab, Attack (punch, etc.), Lunge, Special; at least that's how I always thought of them. Putz around until you get the right one -- or read the manual, I think it has a diagram of the controls.

I believe you just hold down the full attack button ("B" on the 360)

Yeah it's not enough to hit the bell with the hammer, it has to be fully charged.
