Undead cleric - turns himself?

1. Undead fear positive energy.
2. Cleric is Undead.
3. Undead Cleric fears positive energy.

If an Undead Cleric worships a good god, he may very well fear the emanation of positive energy that flows through the holy symbol. Shiver... it's almost like good drow still hating sunlight.

The question isn't so much "Why should a cleric suffer the effects of his own turning?" So much as "Why is an undead worshipping a good god?" ... not to say it's completely implausible. It's unique enough to allow this screwball stuff. If they're wierd, they deal with wierd stuff. ^_^

Undead clerics can be turned/rebuked by OTHER clerics, but it doesn't affect himself. There are FEATS that can, by using a turn undead attempt, empower himself.

And yes he would hurt himself using lay on hands.

SRD: Lay on hands. Once per day, the blackguard can use this supernatural ability to cure himself or his fiendish servant of damage equal to his Charisma bonus x his level.

So unless I missed a line somewhere.... ::shrugs:: being able to inflict would make sense in a way though

Ooh, shows what I know! (I haven't actually used a blackguard...)

-and, in looking in my 3.5 DMG, it seems blackguards no longer lay on hands at all. Interesting...

I don't think it's so cut and dry.

The SRD does specifically say "cure himself ... of damage" so it isn't too much of a stretch to assume that it kicks over to negative energy when you become undead. It doesn't specifically say it is positive energy, just that damage is cured.

But it becomes even more of a problem in that a fiendish servant can also be so affected, and the fiendish servant of an undead master isn't undead.

Hey now, there's nothing cooler than an undead fiend.

And actually, turning takes place on Lowest and Closest HD first - so if there were any lower HD undead within 60 Ft of the Cleric, he would turn those first, only turning himself when the undead had the same or greater HD as he had ( and assuming his turning check could turn him and he still had turn damage left). If he was all by himself and turned, I'd let the stupid PC be Stunned for a minute, with the word "Dumbass" ringing in his ears :P. Interestingly, a neutral cleric can choose to Turn or Rebuke undead - but not both - its a one time choice. So a neutral undead cleric of a neutral deity can turn himself. Not that I'd ever allow it as a PC option in my campaing (though it would provide a fairly amusing ally for the PC's to wonder over)

Before you say that the character is dumb it is possible that the undead had been advanced somehow to have a higher hd than expected, a lot of the higher CR undead have way more hd than a normal cleric would.
