I'd have to say no, both for balance and flavour reasons. There enough classes treading on the toes of Fighters (*cough* Warblade *cough*) already, why diminish them even further? They have precious few things to call their own as it is...

I vote no. The variant says you get fighter bonus feats in exchange for your sneak attack progression; it doesn't say you can ignore the prerequisites. For example, if he were a fighter, a 1st-level rogue would qualify for Weapon Focus as his bonus feat (because he'd have BAB +1). But he isn't a fighter, and he doesn't qualify. Why should Weapon Specialization, et al., be any different?

Yes, but what is you view on rogue levels counting as fighter levels for the purpose of feat qualification?

A lot of the fighter feat are usually Base attack requirements rather than a specific level. In those I would say yes. Otherwise it would be the BA that the rogue would have earned at X level.

I would add that feats that say specific to a fighter the rogue would be barred from.

Okay, first off ... I had to really read the question about 10 times to make sure I answered it the right way.

But no way would I let the rogue levels count as fighter levels. If for no other reason than they are still rogues! Even if they are getting bonus feats, you are still writing Rogue on the character sheet. A level four rogue using that variant has Rogue 4 written on the top of the sheet, not Fighter 4.

If they want it to count as a fighter, then let them take the fighter class and give up the rest of the rogue abilities.

I allow the Rogue variant, but I voted no. I wouldn't want the variant Rogue to take the only thing which is really exclusive of fighters.

I even think that it would be better if the bonus feats of this variant were not the same as the Fighter bonus feat list, but instead were a different, slightly less martial list.

I agree whole-heartedly with this, but I understand that WotC didn't want to put that much thought into a 3 or 4 line item in a subset of general class changes at the end of a section in which some class changes got much more space. But, I do agree that an alternate list would be cool.

So you would allow the rogue to have a 'virtual BAB' for the purposes of qualifying for fighter feats? So the rogue would qualify gor Weapon Finesse (+1 BAB prereq) at first level?
