Keep in mind that WotC's sculpts and concept art is probably a year old by the time the minis come out in a set. I would say that it's just a coincidence
Not for as often as it happens.

Wotc art [notably Wayne Reynolds's art] and some reaper minis match up far too often and far too closely to be coincidental. It seems give and take, with sometime the reaper mini existing first, sometime the wotc art existing first…

Dungeon magazine cover with animating Egyptian statures looked like the reaper statues of that flavor

Dungeon magazine cover with the no-neck Demogorgon looks a fair bit like the recent reaper mini.

The Thayan Knight…

Maybe I'm just cynical but I imagine that the reason why they made it a rare is because it is a popular mini. People will buy more boosters in the hope of getting an elusive Displacer Beast. My economical mind tells me that would be a good thing to do from a sales and profit perspective.

Usually it's because of paint/assembly steps. The Huge Packlord was uncommon, but two pieces and not much paint. Perhaps this is more. The tentacles would seem to add to the complexity of the minis and they look much better here than the Packlord.

I do think they should have done an Uncommon though. Hard to have the Packlord lording over figures that are harder to find them him.

Funny you should mention that -- I bought ten Packlords from Auggies, and I'm currently rebasing them onto square 2 inch GW bases. Works great, and I'll bet I got all ten packlords for the price of 1 Unhallowed DBeast.

I'm glad to know that actually works, Kunimatyu! I'm thinking of doing that myself.

As long as you're careful with cutting off the feet, it works well -- and you're left with Huge bases for mounting other minis! I put a giant croc and a scorpion I got from a toy store on them and they look great.

I take it that by rebasing them you make them large creature instead of a huge one?

Olaf the Stout

Precisely. The Packlord is a pretty small Huge already(I wonder if it was a failed DBeast sculpt that got recruited as a Huge?) and since its maximum length extended would be about 15 feet tops, and Large creatures are 8-16 ft long, it seemed like it'd be better as a Large. I can post some pics if people want, I suppose.
