Update -- Gaming wives, the ongoing saga!

Woohoo! We're having a fetchin' gamers general conference here! ;)

Sorry for the in-joke. And not a very good one at that...

(shrug) I really think I have Harry Potter to thank! She watches that movie all the time; that might have been what perked her interest in things fantastic. It also didn't hurt that (unlike our group in Idaho) she gets along with all the players away from the table.

That makes all the difference in the world.

I also had a theory that she felt guilty because recently I admitted that I didn't like participating in another group she participates in but have done so without a peep for years, but she denies that's the reason. :)

When she starts painting miniatures figures, then you will have her completely hooked. :)

Maybe I should try to make it back down to Southern MD again for old times sake. You guys meeting pretty regularly?

Yeah, but it's pretty much a totally different group than you were playing with. We do have someone that commutes from Va again, though. :)

How coincidental! My wife joined my regular gaming group for the first time ever just over a week ago. As someone else suggested, I had her describe her character concept to me, and then took responsibility for rolling up the actual character and explaining her capabilities. Worked well.

I also took the unconventional route of starting her at 11th level, making it less likely that her character would die from a single mistake or bad roll. (Besides which, that level of play comes closer to our mutual perception of heroic fantasy. The last thing a new player wants to hear is that their character can't do such-and-such, simply because they're not high enough level yet.)

And finally, I asked one of my regular players to assist her in interpreting her capabilities, referencing the rules, etc. during play. Very helpful.

No, you don't ever tell newbies that they can't do something because they're not high enough level! You let them try it anyway and then laugh as they fall flat on their butts trying! :)

Although if the newbie is your wife, as mentioned here, then you better make sure you don't laugh too hard...

I also have to throw out a congratulations to Psion. My wife started gaming with me when we were engaged, and now (9 years later) some of my fondest campaigns are the one-on-one campaigns I run with my wife.

Currently, I DM a group of friends about once per month, my one-on-one with my wife about 1-2 times per week, and my wife/brother-in-law/two brothers (one is 12)/and two oldest daughters (8 & 12) about once per two weeks.

I must say, the family that games together has a better chance of me killing all their characters at once.

Hopefully your wife enjoys herself and sticks with it...:D

A few months back, my husband announced that he wanted to play, so I know just how pleased and nervous you are, Psion!

At the time I had been planning to start a new campaign, so it worked out pretty easily. First I ran him through a few of the adventures from the boxed set, while I played a character too. Then, when he had a basic concept of how the rules worked, I helped him create the character he had in mind.

Two of the other players were already friends of ours, and the fourth player was a friend of one of them, so it wasn't too stressful, I don't think. We're going to be having our third session this weekend, and given how often it has come up in conversation, I think he's getting into it, although he's pretty shy, so the role playing stuff hasn't come easily or naturally to him.

Even though he says that he really is interested, and not just doing it because I want to, I'm not convinced. But I'll enjoy his company for as long as he wants to participate!

I'm jealous of you guys getting your spouses to play. My wife doesn't game, but she has agreed to start out by playing Magic: The Gathering with me so I think it's a step in the right direction. Also, I try to do things with her like scrapbooking (yep, I'm LDS too...lol) I'm just waiting for the day that she decides to game with me. I think that'd be great!!

What's with LDS and gaming? Didn't your religion ever blast Dungeons and Dragons like so many others?

My recommendation is to try to run a session where she never needs to look at a character sheet. Maybe she needs to roll a die here or there, but very little poring over the sheet. For newbies, looking at the numbers can kill the fantasy feel.
