Heck, people new to the game almost certainly don't know changes are coming in two years...
I ran a came shop back when 3.5 came out and people were buying 3.0 books still because of the whole backwards compatible hype WOTC was still spitting at us. Lots of annoyed customers coming back in about a month before when some of the bigger changes were shown in Dragon Magazine.

I left the shop right after 4e came out, like 3 weeks after and we had people coming in buying 3.5 with NO clue a 4e was even on the way up to when we got the release posters. Not the preview books, the promo posters about a month before and it was about a year from announcement until release so yeah, there is definitely a lack of awareness.

I have even heard around the community locally where I am that it's a 5.5 and that it's a complete over haul, a new game, for those even aware. I point to MotM and comments from Ray that the indicated direction is complete Backwards compatible with current 5e material and still get some pushback.

Just for fun, I went and looked up the various edition’s PHB’s. This is there number at the time of this post (note, some of the books have multiple entries, I just used the ones with the original release date/cover)

PHB 1E - #505,089 in books, #329 in ”Computer & Internet Game Strategy Guides” (CIGSG)
PHB 2E - #185,137 in books, #482 in CIGSG
PHB 3E - #278,480 in books, #235 in D&D
PHB 3.5E - #181,620 in books, #179 in D&D
PHB 4E - #159,219 in books, #168 in D&D
Pathfinder - #77,039 in books, #27 in Pathfinder Games
Pathfinder 2E - no data

I don’t know what to say about Pathfinder 2E - I’m hoping its some glitch on the page, not that it hasn’t sold in a while.

Note that this is all live, up to the moment data, not historical. The 5E PHB is the 3rd best selling book right now, with live sales, not all time.

Paizo seems to have had their PF2E products recatagorized as board games some time ago, so they stopped showing up in the same lists as 5E books. They were not selling favorably in comparison before that switch.

Wild Beyond the Witchlight is in the same category as Pathfinder 2e but there are no rankings listed for it.
