[Updated 7/5] Latest update on my FR game: as ever, opinions wanted

Cool beans. I too started my Midnight campaign last week and it went well. Hopefully now that I've switched to weeknight games this can be a regular thing.

I wanted to let you guys know -- we got some playing time in yesterday, after everyone had done the Easter dinner thing with their families. It went pretty well. I'll be putting up a story hour sometime in the near future -- it's gonna take me a little bit of time since I want to do it in full-out prose, so I'll probably put it up as I finish sections. I'll letcha know when I start doing that.
Great! I can't wait to read it!

Alright, gang, the first part is up. Feel free to comment. You'll find it here

More to come as it's written -- we played up to the point where they rescued Alec and took him to Vanderghast. I'll have the next bit finished as soon as I can.

Alright, gang -- the complete log of the first session is done. Now get over there (here) and let me know what you think -- if it sucks, I won't continue doing it. I myself think it sucks, but I might just be overly critical of my own work. I need you guys to leave me comments and let me know how it REALLY is, so I know whether I should continue or not! Thanks

I'm new to the whole story hour thing so I'd take my reccomendations with a grain of salt. I liked it but it was a little wordy for my tastes. Probably won't be so bad once you get to the meat and potatos of the campaign but having the characters meet in the tavern just seemed to drag. Since tavern meetings are very cliche' I'd have summarized that part. :D

Well, folks, I call on your help once again. The gang's all rarin' to go drow-hunting this weekend, so I came up with a fun little Underdark plot. Now I just want to get it a stamp of OK before I start the statting. Since you guys helped shape the campaign into what it is today, I figured I'd ask you.

Drow
Routinely raid the surface for humanoid infants and children that can be raised as slaves. In recent months have dealt with the continual theft of their slaves by the illithids. The last surface raid was about a week ago, in Cormyr. Much of the raiding party didn’t make it back, and the take was mostly human infants. The survivors were attacked by the illithids on their way back, and most of their latest take was stolen from them.

Illithids
Small band led by a powerful sorcerer. Recently he has begun to experiment with magical control devices, hoping to find new ways of implementing them. His ultimate goal is to create a magical device – either control or contingency – that can be implanted in a person, surround them with its aura, and yet be completely undetectable to anything less than manual invasive surgery. The slave and sleeper agent potential for something like this is limitless. To test each iteration of the experiment, the illithids steal new humanoid slaves from the drow (although the drow themselves would be preferable, their natural magical immunities make them trickier test subjects).

Red Wizards
"Scorpius," a favored agent of the Zulkir of Conjuration, has been sent to look into the illithids and their experiments. Originally sent to side with the illithids and steal their experiments should they succeed, he has instead approached and allied himself with the drow. He did this after learning that they may have kidnapped infant Azoun V. By allying himself with the drow, he can still take the illithids’ experiments while they were distracted by the drow (outfitted with magic items supplied by him) attack, but now he can also secure the infant by demanding the child as payment for his assistance. The drow, who were apparently unaware of exactly what they had in their possession, readily agreed to the Thayan’s terms. However, upon inspecting the humanoids recently taken, "Scorpius" was displeased to learn that apparently Azoun was among the number that had been stolen by the illithids. Of course, this made his bargain with the drow almost useless – but then again, if he was going to have to fight the illithids for what he wanted, some cannon fodder would be nice…

PS - Come on -- Calico Jack's the only one who has comments on the story hour? I said please, didn't I? ;)

Personally? I'd play up the Mind Flayers as much as possible. You could run an entire campaign if they were to get captured by the Flayers, taken to their underdark city, and then they have to try to escape. If you've got about $5 to spare I HIGHLY reccomend going to RPGnow and downloading "The Illithiad". It is a 2E AD&D book that is filled with info on the race. It's one of the best books written on Underdark civs by far. The majority of the book is fluff so you can readily use it in 3E. It also isn't about any one Mind Flayer city but is about their customs and civilization. I love it!

Latest update

It's been a while since I gave any kinda updates, for those of you who still care... my group and I met about 2 weeks ago to play, and it went EXCEPTIONALLY well. They took the drow bait as expected, and followed a few leads into the Underdark. Down there, they found out about the illithids stealing slaves from the drow (who were stealing children from the surface for slaves themselves). They chose to follow the drow first, and ended up in a fight with a Red Wizard who had been attempting an alliance with the drow. The fight was bad-ass, and the wizard really gave them a hard time of things, which pleased me. After a little bit of running in circles and the drow actually requesting an alliance, they were dealt with harshly. The group decided they weren't crazy enough to go after the illithids at this time, as they were fairly sure that they didn't have Azoun. Meanwhile, Vangerdhast and Alec -- backed by Calednai, who's basically turned into her former master's obedient little servant, took some knights and wizards to Cormanthor and had themselves some surface drow-slaughtering fun. The group figured out that the drow that took Azoun were illusions, and they began going down a list of magic-users who might have taken Azoun. They came up with a list of three who fit all the criteria, all former War Wizards of Cormyr -- one's now a Shade, one hangs with Halaster Blackcloak, and the last one is a Red Wizard. The group's now braced for a clusterfrell like no other...

I'll get around to adding all of this to the story hour eventually, but I started a new job and time is a rare commodity right now -- plus, whatever writing time I have, I've been working on a superhero novel I decided I wanted to do... it'll happen sooner or later, I just dunno when. And hopefully, we should be playing again soon, so watch this space for notes about my next session -- we're jumping ahead a month since the gang wanted to do some research and whatnot, and Alec's going to be on the throne now... should be be fun...
