Upgrading Windows

First Post
I'm thinking quite seriously of upgrading Windows, as I now have an inability to run Java and an inability to use my digital camera ( ) thanks to Windows ME. At least I hope that's what it is...

At any rate, if I upgrade to XP, will I lose my saved files?

No, your files will be just fine. Yet, I would highly suggest a reformat. You can upgrade, but the most performace gain is a fresh install of XP. If you are going to format don't forget MP3s, my documents, my favorites and other irreplacable files. Also having high speed internet works the best as there are quite a few big downloads for a new system.

Windows ME suxx.

Agreed. I had ME loaded and it gave me such problems I formatted it and reloaded 98SE.

I would also agree that NEVER upgrade an OS over an old OS. You just bring the problems of your old OS right along with you. Always try to get a full version and start fresh with a formatted drive.

If you need things off your old drive, pick up a new one (they're fairly cheap these days), make it your primary drive and load the new OS on it. After you're done loading, then attach your old drive in the system as a secondary drive and bring over any info you need off of it. If you hook in your old drive before loading the new OS, it might refuse to load because it sees an OS on one of the drives.

If you're looking to use a Windows OS, I would recommend XP Pro (stay away from XP Home). I have had no problems at all with it, at home or at work.

Hope this helps!

Really? I had no problem upgrading WinME, which, I agree, sucks, to Win2kPro. My system has had *no* problems since the upgrade, and that was almost 2 months ago.

That's great. The original poster stated that he had all sorts of craziness happening with his OS. IMO, in a case like that, it is better to reload the OS "clean" than to try an upgrade.

I'd have to toss my chips in with WinXP Home too. I've been running it for quite awhile now and I LOVE it. I can honestly count the number of times it's frozen/crashed on me on one hand.

Aaah... Microsoft can be so cruel (ME) and so wonderful (XP).. all at the same time :D
