[Urban Arcana] Sources for Incantations?

Very true, and thanks for the mention. To be fair, I should say that we used Mongoose's magic system from OGL HORROR, which doesn't treat incantations exactly the same way.

Doh! I KNEW that! Sorry to mislead you, shadowlight.

I still recommend 12 to Midnight's products though - great, fun stuff!

Incantations

Most D&D spells can be turned into incantations. I really don't like the "spells under 6th level can't be used as incantations" rule, so I throw that out completely, and I ignore all the spell seeds (just like I do with the epic rules, I just let characters use the rules to modify standard spells into epic spells).

When I've gone through and converted low level spells to incantations they still end up with DCs in the 30s. Can you give me an example of one of your converted low-level spells?

Thanks!

IIRC, The Game Mechanics' Modern Magic has rules for creating incantations from lower level spells.
I saw that yesterday and went and picked up a copy :)

It has a "Ritualist" class which is kind of interesting (I may use it for some of my NPCs), but the best part is that it has "Lesser Seeds" for making incantations. They're less powerful, but they end up making incantations with DCs in the 20s instead of the 30s and 40s. It's pretty well thought out - it has Element seeds (earth, air, fire, water, spirit) and Mode seeds (Alter, create, disrupt, protect, understand) that combine together just like in the incantation creation rules in Urban Arcana. It also has a quick formula for comng up with DCs for existing spells (as well as what seeds they would use... very cool)

It pretty much fills exactly the hole in my campaign that I was looking to fill.

So, just in case anyone cares, my modern campaign is fully fleshed out with:
  • d20 Modern
  • Urban Arcana (w/ MSRD Incantation List)
  • Modern Magic by The Game Mechanics (Lesser Incantations)
  • Psychic's Handbook by Green Ronin (Psi rules)
  • Slaves of the Moon by Mike Mearls (Lycanthrope class levels)
  • Beyond Countless Doorways by Malhavoc Press (for modern-world meets freaky planar weirdness)

This gives me a complete psi/magic FX system that is totally un-D&D feeling... very Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Dark*Matter :)

Incantations

You know as a DM you have every right to reduce the DCs of Incantations by 10 or 15 just because, well, just because you are the DM. And I don't think any player would argue if you did so (and the one who does should have several pillows thrown at him).
