Urn Your Pay (Rae judging)

Karm's watch (assuming nothing goes wrong) will consist of him keeping one hand on the bag of Grigs. Every half hour he will tell Kuma to patrol the border of the camp (much to the wolf's dismay). When 3 hours have passed he will wake Ter-raen and settle in to take his own rest.

The grigs safely secured, the party settles in for the night. Erf stays awake for a long time, poking at the fire and whispering to his companion.

In the morning, Erf is up early, and skitters about nervously, muttering to himself and repeatedly trying to scrub accumulated dirt and swamp residue off of his clothes. He even tries to catch a glimpse of his reflection in the surface of the swamp, but only greenish ooze looks back at him.

Around sunrise, the reason for his apprehension becomes clear when an exotically beautiful green-skinned nixie approaches the group from the uphill forest. Tightly clothed in rather revealing garments of supple leaves, she shows no signs of having accumulated any of the mess that clings so stubbornly to Erf.

Erf immediately rushes to greet her, then stops short, suddenly embarrassed. "Kshatrya! You came! I... I wasn't sure if ye would."

Kshatrya smiles at him. She looks slightly tired when she smiles. "Yes, I'm here. I've thought hard about it, as you told me to. I've decided that I want try to learn to serve Galatea properly. I'm going to see Sister Anemone and ask her to take me as an apprentice."

Erf smiles, but his foot starts to trace small circles in the mud. "That's great! I'm sure ye'll be great. But, um, I was wonderin' if... Well, that is, if ye... You see, I started to worry about sendin' ye to her all unannounced and such, and... Well, d'ye think maybe..."

Kshatrya looks alarmed. "What is it, Erf? Do you think she might not take me? Oh, no! I thought you said she would!"

Erf hastens to reply. "No, no, I'm sure she'd love to have ye! It's just... well, I don't know if she'd understand, not knowin' ye like I do, and ye bein' not so experienced with the rest of the world and all... Well, I thought maybe I should go with ye. To introduce ye, like? And... and get ye settled? Unless ye don't want me to..." His voice trails away uncertainly.

Kshatrya shrieks with joy, and bounds forward, scooping Erf into a crushing hug. An interesting effect, given that she is about a head taller than him. "Oh, I'd hoped, but I didn't dare ask if you would come with me. That will make everything so much nicer. Oh, I'm so excited! Come on, let's go!"

Erf, grinning like a beholder, scampers to pick up his pack. "Come on, Fenenn! Here, boy! Bye, Gildrim, Ter-raen! It was fun workin' with ye! I'm sorry to leave ye so sudden, but.." he shrugs, a helpless smile on his face as he turns to leave. He half-turns as he trots away, calling over his shoulder. "I put the candle and some of those cards next to Ter-raen's pack. Look us up when ye come back to Cragger's Rest!"

Kshatrya calls belated greetings and a hasty farewell too, and Fenenn barks joyfully as the three disappear into the swamp.

A long moment of silence passes, and then Apikotoa breaks it. "Who was that?"

"He looked a bit like Erf, but dafter," says Gildrim with round eyes, and unexpectedly clearly.

"Hemm, hmm, weel, he's goan, an' th' lassie wi' him. Guid fortuin tae th' silly twasome."

Tired from his watch, Karm sleeps until the two are saying their farewells. He awakes to see them walking off together. "Sounded like those two aren't going to return," he says. Then to Gildrim and Ter-Raen he says, "I must perform my morning meditation. Then I will see about perhaps collecting some food. Afterwards we must discuss how we should proceed."

[sblock=oog] I'm just memorizing cure spells for now.

Karm finds that the swamp, while bleak and unpleasant to look at, is blooming with life. There are edible berries and mushrooms and water plants to spare, and with the aid of Kuma's nose, small game is plentiful as well.

[sblock=on foraging and provisions]I'm not terribly worried about keeping track of food. On the one hand, Karm can easily take 10 on survival checks to feed himself and Kuma, and probably everyone else too. On the other hand, I'm not inclined to penalize you for forgetting OOC to buy provisions before coming here. I did give you time to go shopping, and I'm perfectly happy to retcon in the purchase of trail rations and such if you'd rather do it that way.

Either way, I'm ready to move on when you guys tell me where you're going.[/sblock]

Karm returns to the campsite from his morning respite after about an hour looking refreshed and carrying an armful of food. "Breakfast is served!" he says, letting the vegetables and mushrooms fall to the blanket. He also takes two rabbits out of some pouches sewn onto Kuma's barding. He sets about cleaning the animals and soon the delicious smell of roasted meat fills the campsite. Once the victuals are eaten or packed away Karm speaks up saying,

"Now, you two know quite a bit more than I about how best to proceed, since I'm barely familiar with the events that have lead us this far. What would you suggest we do?"

OOC: ready to roll

"Verra nice. Weel, haur's hou it is," says Gildrim after eating. "As ye micht hae gaithered, thaur's a birrial urn somewhaur in or roond aboot th' auld hoose. It isnae oan th' first fluir. Thaur's some stairs goin' doun, an' thaur's some stairs goin' up. We haed juist haed a peek oan th' second fluir, whan we ran intae speeders an' a hudder ay craws, an' they pecked us full ay holes, an' sin we war oot ay healin', we stappit.

"It's dark inside for human eyes, sae ye'll be needin' tae hauld th' magic caundle. Keep a leuk oot for beasties, an' ye'll be fine."

Gildrim packs up, readies his shield, draws his sword, ready to retrace the party's steps to the upstairs hallway.

ooc: Trouvere kindly pointed out that I neglected to award XP. He's quite right, I should have, but I need to go back and figure out who gets what, which will take some work. I'll do that, and we'll consider the xp to have been awarded at this point.

"Very good then! Eleanor said I needed experience, well this is experience," Karm mutters under his breath. "You ready, Kuma?" Karm says to the young wolf, who happily looks up at him and licks his hand when he pets his head. "That looks like a yes to me!"

Karm packs a few of his belongings into the pouches on Kuma's barding and adjusts his own armor and shield.

"We're ready."

[sblock=ooc:] I wasn't thinking and started out with hide armor, so move speed is 20ft, shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up though.[/sblock]

Ter-raen quietly packs his stuff into his bag. His mind still has the images of Erf leaving the group with his new companion. First the human, now the gnome. It feels like somehow he is jinxed to make everyone leave, just like his sister.

The half-orc barbarian sighs to himself a little, then checks his blade to make it is ready and sharp. At least this is something he can make right.
