I used the rules for a Dark Sun game, once, as a replacement for psionics. I just ruled that it did subdual damage.
It worked out pretty well, with the exception that barbarians had the most reserves. With the high psionics level of Dark Sun, it also meant that most fights ended with a knockout, instead of a kill.
