Vecna Question

Why, to reduce his "off-hand" penalty, of course... ;)

But after all those years, you think he wouldve learned to fight with the other hand regardless of whether he had the feat or not. :)

If he ever gets his hands... er hand on his other hand, you'd better look out!

I heard a rumor that he uses a big baseball finger as a prosthetic.

I'm still trying to figure out how he got his eye cut OFF. Maybe Kas attacked him with a post hole digger?

Venca... "Off-hand"...

That's a joke, son. A flag waver. You're built too low. The fast ones go over your head. Ya got a hole in your glove. I keep pitchin' 'em and you keep missin' 'em. Ya gotta keep your eye on the ball. Eye. Ball. I almost had a gag, son. Joke, that is.

Yeah- I got it there Foghorn. :D

He's the god of secrets, right? Well, what better way to learn the secrets of the universe than to be one who can call on the power of the gods? Of course, since he's a god himself that doesn't work so well... :o

The Vecna legend took a thrashing in 2E and 3E. Kas did not cut off the hand and eye, they survived because they were imbued with great magic by Vecna himself. The other falacy is his appearance. he does not appear missing a hand and eye because that is what survived. He is Vecna not Gummish. What is left of Grummish is a body missing an eye. What is left of Vecna is a eye and hand missing a body. He is not supposed to appear as anything.

That is still no reason for the greatest wizard ever to aquire cleric levels.

*shrug*. Vecna is no longer the greatest wizard ever. He's more than that. He's a god. In becoming a god, do you not expect him to surpass the mortal limits under which he previously operated?

This, of course, aside from the fact that the original history of Vecna wasn't written under 3E rules. Did you try to convert a 2E campaign to 3E, and notice how somethings didn't quite fit? If we can't convert all the non-epic level PCs cleanly, why should empic and deity class critters have it easy?

I guess my problem is that I see his rise to power as subtle and we have these adventres that make changes to the character to make his rise to power flashy and cool. I would set the events out like this:

Vecna Born
Becomes Wizard
Rises in Wizard Levels
Becomes Lich, rises in wizard levels
"Hires" Kas
FINDS powerful sword and gives to Kas
Long, long time passes. Vecna obviously rises in wizard levels
Kas rebels, destroys and is destroyed by Vecna
eye and hand of vecna remain and circulate
spirit of vecna exists on the prime,
apparently possessing anyone using the hand or eye.

END 1E version
LEAVE OUT 2E (too many changes to the relics and events)
BEGIN 3E (based on PHB listing and Di&Dg, avoiding relics as they are derived from 2e changes.)

eventually (over eons) spirit becomes demigod
and then becomes a god.
Vecna god of secrets exists in non-material form on material plane.

It seems to me Vecna would keep his divinity a closely guarded secret. Also, Nerull would probably more often than not grant spells in the name of Vecna.
