Vecna Question

You know, when you get down to it, Vecna's history HAS always been vague, contradictory, and poorly sketched out--the supposed 'spoilings' of 2nd and 3rd editions to the character represent various attempts to flesh out, and then rectify the various versions of the story...

But you wish to know why Vecna has cleric levels. Easy! He worships the mysterious overgod the Serpent. Ta-da! Next question!

Vecna and Kas both seem like very Moorcockian creations to me. Compare the eye and hand of Vecna, for instance, to the eye of Rhynn and the hand of Kwyll. Likewise, there seems to be a Sword of Kas/Stormbringer parallel. That's how it's always hit me, anyway.

And, of course, "Vecna" is an anagram of "Vance" (as in, Jack Vance).

Maybe because he wants it that way. And really, are you gonna argue with him? :D

I noticed the stormbringer parallel too. I will investigate the moorcock influences and also the Vance thing. Interesting. I need to find Brian Blume. I have some questions for the man...

Aaron.

I think it's quite simple why he has 20 cleric levels. If you can give your followers certain spells, it would be silly if you couldn't cast them yourself.

I now demand more jokes about Vecna in return for my wisdom. Now, fools! :D

Well, the Eye of Rhynn and Hand of Kwyll came from the first three Corum books by Michael Moorcock. Vance may be a red herring, since I suspect the anagram was more for fun than anything else. Why not try asking Gygax himself about it, just in case he knows? After all, there's that handy thread up there. :)

I agree with you. In the respect that Vecna would be granting spells. Still I think he should have been a more epic wizard. Granted the rules were not out yet.

Aaron.
