Vegetarians and the Single Man

Moosewood, Moosewood, Moosewood ;)

Oh, and check in your local bookstore for good books on Chinese and Indian cuisine -- if there are no good vegetarian recipes there, then you are majorly in trouble, given the temperament of those culinary schools!

I had a fiancee who was vegetarian. Every year at this time I would make her a Fu-Key. Essentially I started with her tofu "burger" recipe, but added in Bell's Seasoning and rather than shaping it into patties I went to town. The last time I made it I actually put a touch of soy sauce in part of the recipe to make the "dark meat" and the whole critter was something like 6" long (no, didn't even attempt to do full size!) and has a small cavity for about 1tsp. of stuffing ;)

Sadly, despite all my culinary expertise, she ended up leaving me before we got to the alter, but at least she went off well fed! :D

I think I get Merak's point though. He just wanted to clarify that there are varying reasons, but some of them can be a little touchy for some. Its good to be aware of them, and sensitive to their existence, but he did not want to responsible for a food fight. :)

Clay,
My point was to bring up HER possible motivations for being a vegetarian. Those are the general arguements used by vegetarians. I asked for them not to be discussed because I didn't want the thread to degenerate into something like this and get closed down.

Lasagna is generally an impressive meal that you could prepare for her as a (L-O) vegetarian dish. Not exactly low carb, 'though.

There are lots of really nice, impressive seafood pasta dishes. Perhaps a nice garlic bread to go with?

Learn to make a good Thai peanut sauce. Several dishes go well with it, and it's generally strong enough that you can use tofu in place of chicken without noticing the difference too much. Also good for getting enough protein.

Lentil soup w/ pitas & hummus? Margherita pizzas? Black bean burgers? Grilled cheese sandwiches w/ tomato soup? Sour cream enchiladas?

Afraid I'm not coming up with much on the low-carb, high protein side...

. . . . . . . -- Eric

I think people underestimate how different vegetarian cooking is from the usual omniverous diet. Skade, could you give us a list of the recipes at which you are proficient? I'm an ex-vegetarian whose limited inter-gender relations skills are concentrated in the area of cooking so I can probably help out.

Because pasta is twice-cooked, it is not a starchy carbohydrate in some diets (in others it still is) but I think pasta dishes are a good place to start. I know hundreds of vegetarian recipes so I'm not going to start just enumerating them here without knowing what you like to cook and what you are good at cooking. If she still does fish, though, I might recommend sole florentine on a bed of linguine for a start -- very fancy and easy to make.

i understand why you said it. i just think if you do not want an item discussed it is best not to bring it up.

just a different way of looking at it. no harm, no fowl.
