blog:
Much has happened since last I wrote one of these journals. I moved, for one--out of Manhattan and into the borough of my birth. Doc's done I don't know how many paintings, gearing up for a solo show he's got coming up in October. Plans for a special animated short for the San Diego Comicon were hatched, nurtured and then scrapped--although we will be attending. Don't know if we're going to be on any panels or anything (updates will undoubtedly follow) but we'll definitely be at some sort of Adult Swim booth at some point, chatting and signing and drawing or something. We have indeed finally turned the key and ignited the powerful Venture Bros. entertainment engine, though, which was slow to start after a long, cold winter, but currently purring like a kitten. Hasn't been much to report, since we're just writing and trying to staff up and stuff.
Two scripts in the pipeline so far (one mine, one Doc's), neither of which will be the season premiere (yes, we're writing them out of order again, and hopefully we can find a way to keep the adultswim website from confusing everyone this season as a result). Obviously can't tell you much about them, lest the surprise be ruined, but I will say that we learn a bit more about Baron Ünderbheit and The Phantom Limb, respectively...and they're funny. Actual animation production will begin in just under a month, by which time we should have another two scripts done--hopefully one of them will be the premiere episode. We know what it'll be and all, we're just holding off on writing that one because it's so heavy with cliffhanger resolution and has much responsibility riding on its shoulders, so it has to be great. Hence, we don't want to get into it until we've got a few others under our belts and we're in a good writing groove. Plus Doc and I will be writing that one together, and our schedules and stuff have been so disparate that we've barely seen each other at the Astrobase this past month.
Our regular cast will all be returning, and J.G. Thirlwell has agreed to score the episodes once more. On that note, he's got a brand new CD coming out under the banner of his Foetus project, details of which can be found here . If you dig the Venture Bros. music, you will double dig this stuff. It's also going to feature some bonus DVD stuff as well, including at least one of the Venture Bros. promos we did last year.
Speaking of cast and crew, past and present, Bill Presing, our indomitable storyboard supervisor from the first season, jumped ship to go to Pixar last year, which is great for him but sucks for us. You can see some of his work on the new Incredibles DVD, in the special features section--the "Mr. Incredibles and Pals" feature has his inky fingerprints all over it.
So last month Doc and I made our way down to Philadelphia, a town filled with all the love AND hate of the fraternal relationship its nickname implies. We were guests at an Adult Swim-themed burlesque night loosely affiliated with the Philly Film Fest, wherein we got to sit on a pitch panel with other creators (from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Tom Goes to the Mayor and Sealab), show some clips, etc. The crowd was unpredictable--at once receptive and warm and then suddenly, drunkenly, 2am-ing-ly rowdy. And of course, semi-nude people dressed as The Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Molotov Cocktease and Dr. Venture were...um...well, that was just weird. But fun. Our thanks go out to all who put the show together, and those in attendance who were superfriendly and fun to talk to. Also present was Mike Manley--comic book artist extraordinaire, Draw! magazine publisher, and Venture Bros. storyboard artist (whom I'd never actually met before), and he took a bunch of pictures. You should check them out on his blog .
The only real bummer was when no one in Philadelphia seemed to be able to give us accurate directions to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (the one that Rocky famously jogged up the steps to), which was having a big Dali retrospective. After literally hours of walking, we found it--both closed and sold out. Oh, and the passenger window of the Mini Cooper we rented for the ride down wouldn't open, so I ended up with more than one of Doc's cigarette butts in my lap after his attempts to toss them out the sunroof, which only added to the uneasiness created by the constantly blinking engine light with an exclamation point icon on it. We never did figure out what it meant, but blinking exclamation points, in my world anyway, usually indicate something fairly noteworthy or dangerous.
Oddly enough, "Careers in Science," which has been re-run god knows how many times already, has suddenly gotten a bump up to a TV-MA rating (having been TV-14 for almost a year, like all the Venture Bros. episodes). I'm told this is because of the sex scene where you don't actually see anything happen and is due to a sudden paranoia in response to some parent groups who've been very vocal lately (not about VB in particular, just TV in general, from what I understand). Apparently we're the first TV-MA broadcast for Cartoon Network, and it's pretty hot that they're willing to air shows with that rating, but on the other hand it's pretty sucky that something that used to be TV-14 is now TV-MA...so my hopes for getting away with even more adult stuff next season are dashed.
Last night, Adult Swim made good on some wacky contest it was holding (apparently in collusion with the Burger King consortium) and awarded some lovely gal the opportunity to program the network for the night. As luck would have it, she's a big Venture Bros. fan and slated five of our episodes. And said nice things about them. So we're certainly grateful to her for that, and that she's not a bigger Family Guy or Inuyasha fan. Thanks for the support, Christine!
I'll say it: I'm a geek. We're geeks. We got tickets for the 3am showing of Star Wars on opening night. Some boyhood dreams simply do not die. Though my boyhood never involved exiting a movie in Union Square at six in the morning, the sunlight mercilessly pounding my eyes, feeling like I'd just dragged my ass out of an all-night rave or something. I only pray the midnight showing of Batman Begins isn't sold out when I jump on Fandango next month...
Saw Sin City, like everyone else in the world. Liked it. I've been a big Frank Miller fan since I was a teenager (there is more than a little Marv in Brock Samson, I have to admit) so it's pretty cool to see him get some more attention, and to see a comic book get turned so rigidly and faithfully into a feature film, for better or worse--regardless of its flaws, it's a fun ride. And Clive Owen gets my vote for the next James Bond...
Anyway, until there's more to report, I'll be here at the new place, typing and doodling to the strains of the ton of new cds that have come out this spring, taking breaks every now and again to re-watch The Life Aquatic for the tenth time...
Superman's Pal,
