[Vile? Mature] Going Too Far.

I am curious to know how Feliath dismisses the rape statistics of 1 in 3 women as "pure bunkum". No support is given for this conjecture.
From my own experience with girlfriends I've had telling me their past histories, I find those statistics to be frighteningly accurate.

Well thats the point. She was driven mad by losing her kids, right? By using "fix" to talk about this npc's psychological trauma, you put it in the same category as, say a flat tire or broken window. Fix fix, patch up, move on. I understand this isn't what you -meant-, but it can be -interpreted- in that way. When bad things happen to people they never get "fixed". People carry around their scars their whole life.

Well, it was one of the PCs who said that.

And... I wouldn't say the PCs are monster-whackers. They've delt with some rather dark things.
 


No, I am the GM. I said, at the beginning of the thread, that I made a PC uncomfortable by introducing this element into the game.
 

Personally, I think that if the topic was handled in a mature fashion and not in a joking manner, you did nothing wrong. If the player can't handle it, tell him/her to get lost. There is nothing wrong with handling such topics in game. In my experience, when the pcs find out an npc indulges in rape, miscarriage, child molestation, or any other disgusting act, it makes them want more than ever to bring the bad guy to justice. They'll even (gasp) forego looting bodies to pursue the villian. And it will bring out excellent role playing from even the most die hard hack and slashers. I think your players jumped on you because THRY were the ones too young, At least from an emotional standpoint. Bad things happen. Ignoring them won't make them go away.

Hmm... I think I understand what you mean, but assuming that Kyrel is an NPC, would it not be faulty to assume that Xarlen implicitly believes what his NPC implicitly believes?

Though I lack any level of direct understanding of the situation, it seems that it wasn't Xarlen who wondered if the character could be "fixed" but rather the character Kyrel.

It seems to me that the person who had the problem with this encounter and the following events probably had the problem in a holistic sense, rather than in just one or two lines of text. Of course, I could be mistaken...

No, it was the Overall situation, spesificly focused on the situation, and not just any things that were spesificly said.
 

MODERATOR'S NOTE

I'm going to ask all parties concerned to be concerned with painting pictures of pther people's psychological attitudes based on either their comments here, or what they had their PC's or NPC's do in response to the situation. I'm not going to close this thread YET, but if it drifts further off the topic of reacting to taboo subject matter in an RPG, then I'm going to have to close it.


I DO think, however, the addition of a "safe word" to a group is a good idea when dealing with mature subject matter. Although typically associated with role-play of an *ahem* different nature, it can work well with RPG's, also.
