Indeed, which is why several books have borders on the outside of the pages to "rein in" your attention back to the page. But look at Adventurers vs. Green Dragon. At the same time the adventurers lead your attention from left-to-right, the dragon does the opposite, and all that ammounts to your attention being drawn to the center of the image (to Sir Leeroy Jenkins, if you will) and the clash of the two movements give the image "weight".
Glad you agree ...

But there must be something wrong with my artistic eye because my attention is drawn to the dragon's head first, and then it traces a spiral down and around the dragon's body, through the first two adventurers, and then up the stairs past the second two adventurers and out the door ...

Well, after you've already seen a picture, it becomes harder to measure the subliminal eye movement, because your brain already knows what's where. At each new viewing, your eye wanders more and more around the image.

I hadn't really looked at it before. I didn't really want to because I hate the green dragon's new look ...

The third option.

It looks the most 'D&D', to me. And I prefer its colour balance, contrast, figures, dynamism, 'story'. . . and I dunno, something kinda 'old skool', too? In a good way, I mean.

That's what comes to mind. Plus, dragons are cool. ;)

I dont really like the third cover, that nose horn is pretty dumb and in general i dont really see the point in using tiny dragons

None of them.

Reynold's has a very particular style. Not saying the guy isn't talented, but it doesn't fit my taste for a cover. The amount of line, contrast and vibrant colors detract from the overall image. A cover should draw you in, where as these covers get lost in their own style.

I appreciate how Wizards is expanding their opportunities for artists who have been with them awhile, though. He does some great interior work.
