I just read a compilation* of Sherlock Holmes stories that take place in different time periods and one was even fantasy. Holmes was male, female, and once a young girl. I'm fine with it.

Have you read The Sweetness At the Bottom Of The Pie by Alan Bradley. I remember thinking it read like Sherlock Holmes, except as a 12-year old girl in 1950's England. Excellent book.
