Should I have gone with a salad joke, then? Or perhaps the Red Velvet Cake?

I got the same (lack of) reaction with a hotel pun, which one would assume is slightly less common than the salad.

However, a Green Waldorf Slaad... that would be hella funny.

For those who were familiar with the Waldorf saga, it was so cool to see the authors put that kind of detail for the old-timers.

That's not a huge surprise, as the author, Roger E. Moore, was the editor of Dragon Magazine who published and answered all of those letters. If I recall correctly, he presented Waldorf in The Adventure Begins as a delusional braggart.

From page 98 of The Adventure Begins...

Waldorf the Archmage (CN human male, Wizard 1, hp 1) is the 64 year old owner of the Roc and Oliphant Tavern. "Waldorf is notorious for his tall tales, most of which allegedly concern his past life as a deity. (He says he was eventually thrown down and made mortal by other jealous gods after a great battle in space.) He is a master storyteller for a failed wizard, and his grandiose but straightforward lies are the envy of all."

Unfortunately, Erik's and my City of Greyhawk update articles in the Living Greyhawk Journal ended just before we got to updating Waldorf's situation. :-( He would have been in the next article.

So it's implied that Waldorf is actually telling the truth (maybe)! The nilbogs defeated him and reality was "rebooted," leaving Waldorf alone as the only mortal who remembers what once was...

What would your take have been? Was Waldorf a former slave of the Codex?

Doesn't seem to imply he might be telling the truth to me, mainly due to this line "...his grandiose but straightforward lies are the envy of all.

Cthulhudrew, I think Roger was serious about calling Waldorf a delusional 1st level failed wizard, and that rip was joking about Waldorf telling the truth. ;-)

An interesting suggestion, and something I'd likely use in my personal campaign, but as much fun as I like to have with the Codex in my campaign, on my website, and in the Greyhawk chatroom... I fully realize that most people don't share my ideas on the Codex, so I try to limit its use in my published writings. ;-)

How would I have handled Waldorf? Keeping in mind of course that anything I say thats not in print carries no more weight then anything anybody else here has to say... I would have hinted at the possibility that Waldorf was indeed something greater then he is now, but had lost it all, including his sanity, making his stories factually dillusional yet rooted in some deep mystery that even Waldorf no longer knows. Exactly what he was, and how he lost it, I would leave undetailed allowing DMs to come up with their own "truth".

Having said that, Waldorf is exactly the sort of backstory that Erik would have kept for himself as we divided up the CoG locations for each article (although we always critiqued eachothers' drafts). :-) I do recall discussing Waldorf with Erik briefly back then, and I vaguely recall him having a somewhat similar pet theory, but don't quote me on that!

I'm familiar with Pun-Pun, the neutronium golem and such... but this is the first I've heard of the 'Mortiverse'. Anyone got info or linky?
