Wall of Dispel Magic question

If a Wall of Dispel Magic (SpC, pg 233) was blocking an entrance to a room, would any spells that target somebody or something on the other side have to "pass through" the wall, and thus make a dispel check?

I realize you could teleport or dimension door into the room, but could you say, cast a Fireball into the center of the room, shoot a Lightning Bolt in there? Or, do you have to beat the dispel check to get through the wall?

Thanks

No. The triggering of the dispel magic -- "anyone passing through it" -- and the type of dispelling it is -- "targeted" -- both preclude it preventing spells from passing through.

Having wall of dispel magic have a choice between effects -- either as it currently is or acting as a counterspell (with a dispel check) on spells passing through it -- seems at first glance to be a pretty cool house rule, though.

But if you allow both, you're powering up the spell significantly.

actually, if you read further into the description, it states:

Spell effects not operating on objects or creatures cannot pass through the screen (Spell Compendium, p. 67)

which means any spell that draws line of effect through the screen will fail.

Well, dispelling screen might be a bit different than the Wall of Dispel Magic spell, though they seemingly do the same thing?
