okay, personal opinion.
Psionics have always seemed to be the "magic" of sci-fi and I feel that's where they belong. If other people like them and have fun with them, great, but I don't.
Valdamar books by Mercedes Lackey. Certainly not the highest-quality series ever written but it is pure fantasy and powers that can only be describe as psionics (mind magic) are a central feature.
Fetching / Firestarting - Psychokinesis / Psychoportation
Mindspeach / Empathy - Telepathy
Foresight / Farsight - Clarsentience
The critical thing is that unlike true magic, their powers were almost entirely self powered with no possibility of outside energy. They were also easier to combine with other users (Convergence / Metaconcert).
The psionics = sci-fi is unfortunately emphasized by the names (often very stupid names - something doesn't become more interesting just by adding "meta" to its name, nor is it generally a correct use of meta; metaconcert being an excellent example).
I have long wished for something like:
Mindspeech - Telepathy
Mindtouch - Psychokinesis
Mindwalking - Psychoportive ((it always cracked me up that Alternity, the sci fi game, had more fantasy names for its psionics than D&D)
Soulforge - Metacreative
Lifeshaping - Psychometabolic
Farsensing - Clairsentience
