Umm...

It's very easy for people who know what they're doing to include a bit of code that makes it appear that an e-mail came from the recipient's own e-mail address. It doesn't mean they've compromised your account. Spammers do it all the time.

See my post in the other thread. I ran a trace on the email. It did, in fact, originate from my POP server. Also, note that (as I mention in the other thread) my Paypal account seems to have been compromised. :(

See, I just looked at the one that I got. I know nothing about computers beyond the use of Word and Internet browsers, but by going into the properties on the Internet head (as explained in the threat on this topic in the Publishers forum), I could see that the e-mail originated from a different sender.

Dunno what to say about your PayPal account, though. Unless you'd used the same password, I can't imagine they're good enough to hack into PayPal. According to everyone I've spoken to who knows what they're talking about, they didn't have to be all that good to get into WW.

Note that the above should not be taken as me calling you a liar or anything like that. I don't think that at all, and if it came across otherwise, I apologize. I just can't imagine anyone bothering to hack into an e-mail account when it's simply unnecessary to accomplish what they've been doing with everyone else.

Well, to be fair, it wouldn't have been too hard (my password was connected to my White Wolf account in a rather obvious way). At any rate, the email I received did originate from my POP server. That might not be the case with everybody's email but it was the case here. The reason this thread exists was because my mailbox wasn't empty when they entered the server, so they may have pulled addtresses for some of my publisher contacts at RPGnow.

The Paypal thing... well... it had the same password as my email account. I tried to change it, but couldn't as Paypal (stupidly) requires that I re-enter the bank account info that I used to validate the account. Note that this bank account has been closed for two years and I have no idea what the routing number is anymore, thus, I can't change jack :):):):). Great security protocols, Paypal.

I'll probably have to abandon the account, which sucks, as I can't re-verify a new one for lack of a bank account at the present time - which in turn complicates some of my online work for hire ventures immeasurably. In short, I've already been very inconvenienced by these :):):):):):):)s. Thank god there was only $1.90 in my Paypal account when they accessed it :D

Do you have an old check for this account? It's a 9 digit number encoded on the MICR line at the bottom of each check.

If that doesn't help you, email me the name of the bank at maxgerry AT gmail DOT com and I'll look it up at work on Monday.
