D&D 5E Was I in the wrong?

I just want to point out we don't know the age of the players and DM in question. They could be 12, they could be in their 50s. If they're young, they might not handle things like adults. Perhaps it's because I post on reddit/dnd a lot, but you see a lot of young people getting into the hobby, and it is important to know that a wide range of people play the game. I wouldn't assume age like this, nor calling people children as an insult when they may, in fact, be children.

No we do not. Calling a child a child is not an insult. In any event the post you quoted was referring to a hypothetical situation involving game investment and its relation to the degree of attention paid to play.

Thanks for this shining example of proper forum moderation!!!!!

Thanks for giving us an excellent example of completely missing a blatant warning. Are you trying to get yourself banned from the thread? I don't know if you read the rules, but Mods are absolute, much like a DM. They may be as kind or as tyrannical as they want. In D&D terms, you are playing at their table(forum), you follow their house rules. If you don't like it find a different table(forum).

I just realized that I should just add "Forum rules lawyer" to my signature, with how often I bring them up...

Update

Had a talk with the group (not with the sorcerer, or Mr Cellphone as he has been called before, because he was busy). Apparently while annoyed at the NPC for tricking them, they were totally fine with what I did as a DM. They are already planning what to do next, coming up with all sorts of wild plans to get their items back. If anything, they informed me that they were most annoyed with the ranger for selling the cursed armor after selling the adamantine armor to the blacksmith, because they wanted to study and remove its curse so they could use it somehow. But the ranger absentmindedly decided to sell that armor as well, even when he had not been instructed to do so.

I'm sure people here will still somehow blame you for it, even though it worked out and the players aren't upset with what happened. Good for you, though.

That is the most important thing, and the true answer to your question. Your players are ok with it, and plan on having fun with how events have played out? You are in the right as far as I can tell. Fun is always most important.

Just because there are no hard feelings in the end doesn't mean that no one was in the wrong. I accidentally stepped on a coworker's foot today. I apologized for it, and he has been no less friendly than normal. That doesn't mean that I should make a habit of stepping on his foot.

If his players aren't blaming him, nobody else here has any right to blame him.

This is such a silly argument.

He came here asking for our thoughts. So you telling us it's not our place to give our thoughts is completely contradictory to the OP, and to the purpose of this forum.
