weapon finesse for fighters

I was thinking about introducinga change to the wf feat. a fighter of (?) Lvl can choose weapon finesse (as one of his Ftr bonus feats) for a weapon as long as he can wielkd it in one hand.

PRE: The fighter must be able wield the weapon with one hand.

Example: Graff the Fighter has exotic weapon proficiency Bastard Sword. so he can select weapon finesse feat for the bastard sword.

Hey

A PC of mine really wanted to make an aristocratic finesse fighter/duellist, but wanted to use a longsword instead of a rapier. T told him to take weapon focus and specialization in longsword, and I wouldn't have a problem. In the end, it turned out just fine - longswords and rapiers are very equivalent weapons. I wouldn't let just any one handed weapon slide though. I know zilch about swordfighting, but I'm guessing certain weapons (battleaxes and heavy maces come to mind) couldn't really be used in such a fashion.

Thanks

some weapons can be used with grace rather than power by any idiot with a high dex score (daggers, rapiers, spiked chains, etc.) other weapons require special training the iajuistu master from OA allows gives the Character the ability to use a katana with weapon finesse. maybe some weapons could require a PrC or a style mastery glaive, bastard sword, half-spear, two-blade sword, and other weapons that require more skill than muscle

Eh .. rapiers and longsword aren't even remotely similar when it comes to using them.

Rapiers are thin pierching blades, and longswords are broad(er) heavy blades used to slash opponents. Longswords also wiegh more than twice that of a rapier.

In what sense? They are not comparable in game stats, neither damage nor weight nor critical hit range. They are not comparable in operating principle -- the power of the rapier is in its tip, and it is most powerfully employed by whipping the tip around and thrusting. The long sword is a weapon made to strike an opponent with the edge of the blade through broad swings. In the rapier, the delicate control of the point is what matters. In the longsword, the power of the swing is what matters.

I mean, as the DM you can do what you want. I just don't think the longsword and the rapier are at all comparable. However, having recently seen Willow again, I'd be willing to suppose that even a two-hander could be wielded with great dexterity. Just the same, there is a very good reason why they deemed the rapier a finessable weapon and the longsword not so. The longsword is a powerful weapon, but the rapier is a subtle one.
