Weapon Finesse

One of my players brought an intreasting question to me. If you are using a quarterstaff and double attacking with it... can you use weapon finesse for the light weapon end?

I personally do not believe so... but the feat does mentions light weapons.

I'd say no... as the quarterstaff is a double weapon, not a light weapon.

But... If the guy wanted to buy all the TWF feats... and weapon finesse just to lessen the off hand attacks a little due to his high DEX, I may be inclined to change my mind... YMMV

Why not just use 2 shortswords?

I'd do everything I could to encourage a blazing staff wielder of spinny death in my game. I don't think it would break the game at all, especially since the bonus applies to your off-hand only (when someone fighting with 2 shortswords can apply to both hands and deal equal damage, and it costs just as much to have magical versions of each weapon). However, I believe that if you go *strictly* by the book it's not a legal move, as a double weapon's off hand side only counts as a light weapon for the purposes of two-weapon fighting.

Guys interested in the quarterstaff should look for the Shillelagh spell and try to get their hands on the feats in the CW book.

Actually, weapon finesse would NOT apply to either end. A Quarterstaff is not a light weapon, and no part of it is a light weapon. However, when using both ends, you may use it as if fighting with a one-handed weapon and a light weapon for purposes of penalties. That's it. It's not really a light weapon, it just counts as one so the penalties are bearable.

The feat mention if you're using light weapons, not "fighting/attacking as if you're using a light weapon." Physically, the quartertaff is a two-handed weapon. It just so happen to have an extra feature, the same way certain polearms have an extra feature (does double damage when set against a charge).

So, regarding that feat, you can't apply it to the off-hand end of a quarterstaff. You'll have to create a "martial arts" type feat that would allow the quarterstaff wielder to use Dex for their attack rolls. I suggest Weapon Finesse be part of the prereq.

Either that or create a Bojutsu Artist PrC/AdC.
