Weapon Speeds For d20 Fantasy Gaming

I must say I like the idea of rogues getting (significantly) more out of daggers than out of longswords.

But I agree greatsword wielders shouldn't get nerfed.

This is why I suggested (early on in the thread) to keep 'slow' weapons on the standard progression (+5) and move the other two categories up to +4 and +3.

Another option would be to allow two-handed weapons count as one category faster.

This would mean greatsword at +5, bastard sword two handed at +5 and bastard sword single-handed at +6.

Again, number crunching is in order to find out what the impact is. Still haven't got around to that.....

Are you saying that, basically, the changes implemented by a weapon speed rule would be minimal?

I'm saying that the issues my reply regarded are non-issues.

Weapon speed is meant, IMO, to be both realistic and narrow the gap between the weapons, making more room for personal taste with less worries about shooting yourself in the leg due to inferrior weapon selection.

Hahaha, no, I'm not blaming you, it just happens to be your threads.

I have rubbed a couple of regulars the wrong way, and I think they delight in coming into my threads and ramping up the snarkiness, especially when I don't agree with their point of view.

And, I would bet, if you looked at their posting history, it really isn't just my threads. I'm sure they have other targets as well.

So, you posted this to get their attention, or what? I fail to see any other point in posting this.

Ya think?

There are many ways to play D&D / D20, and the only conclusion IMHO is that there is no "right" way - whatever you enjoy, have at it.

Now, WaterBob I understand that you try to employ some "ultra-realism" in your Conan games, which is all well and good. And sometimes you start threads that have some interest to me with respect to certain aspects of the D20 game.

At other times, you post lightning rods, like "let's nerf the best melee weapons, where Power Attack can be brought to bear, so that melee types can suck harder in comparison to casters." Or, "let's track the number of nicks in melee characters' weapons so that the weapons can break in combat and they can suck harder in comparison to casters." Then, when this is pointed out, you refer to it as snarkiness.

Sorry, but pointing out that D&D is a game and messing with the already shaky mechanics to the detriment of melee classes has way more of a negative impact on balance than it has a positive impact on "realism" is not meant as snarkiness - it is meant as a dose of reality.
