Web host providers: Your choice?

First Post
I was looking to set up a small web site where I could store some documents, files, etc. Basically, I would like to do this as reasonably cheaply as possible.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a provider that they prefer?

Thanks

Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com) offers a crapload of stuff for about $8 a month. Their service is excellent -- I've hosted two sites with them in the past four years, and had nothing but good experiences -- and what you get is much, much more than the average small site will ever need.

It has zero bearing on my recommendation, but if you decide to host with them and feel like mentioning my username (haiiro) during registration, they have a nice rewards program. ;) In all seriousness, I'd recommend them highly regardless of that.

I've used Tripod as a free host for about the last four years. They provide 20mb and don't allow remote downloads (though you can get around that by cutting-and-pasting the URL you want into the browser window; I store PDFs, JPGs, DOCs, and ZIPs there in addition to my base site), but you can't beat the price.

I'll second the recommendation for Dreamhost. I've been with them for five years now, and have no complaints. Stability is great, customer service is always prompt and understanding, and if you stick with them for a while, you tend to get grandfathered in to cool upgrades when they change their pricing policies.

How are the speeds for DreamHost? Do you have bandwidth issues? I'm a little wary about a host that offers 120GB of transfer each month for only $8.

I use ADT Hosting (www.adthosting.com). They have a good $50/year plan, as well as nice multi-domain hosting plans.

I've been using Doteasy for a few years now and I have no complaints. I'm using their $7.95/month "UltraHosting" plan right now (1 GB disk space, 20 GB bandwidth, support for PHP, MySQL and some other stuff), but they have a variety of plans, starting at 20 MB disk space w/1 GB bandwidth for free. Getting more costs more, but not much.

I'm with 1&1, and though I've only been with them for a few months, they've been fantastic. I'm on their Business package, and I get 2GB of web space and 50GB/month of bandwidth for $9.99 USD. And their servers are blazing fast. I regularly get over 300Kb/sec.
