We're just silly

Mercurius

Legend
Every little action or word that comes out of anyone at WotC's mouth, no matter how innocuous, and we (the diehards) read endlessly into it and then, of course, start a 17-page thread that eventually turns into a debate about whether or not 4E is really D&D to me or the virtues and flaws of GNS Theory.

"Mike Mearls just went to his friend Will's house..."

He's at Will's!!! That means there will be at-will powers!!!!"

"Monte's vacationing in the south of France..."

"France rhymes with Vance!!! Ack! Vancian magic is back!"

"I heard the DJ at a Wizards party played Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight..."

"That's Old School hip-hop!!! D&D Next is going to be an OSR edition!!!"

We, my friends, are the silly. :)

Is this bad?

Obviously you exaggerate. But would a deafening silence be better? We don't have the rules; if WotC wants to give 'em to us, we'll happily discuss the actual rules. As it is, I assume they're happy with us making up random theories instead and discussing them endlessly.

It's social network marketing 101. And it's working perfectly, as far as I can see. Right now we're not the customer, we're the product; and we're doing their publicity for them. I'm OK with that because it's fun. :)

Yes.

Embrace the silliness.

If only you knew the power of the silly side of the game.

Everybody's got a water buffalo.

Ceeeeebuuuuu!

;)

Edition changes are a ripe opportunity to generate ideas and change minds. Wonderful things can emerge from the seemingly formless chatter. It's like the Elemental Chaos/Limbo. ;)

Maybe yours could be a water buffalo of speed and mine could be a water buffalo of slowing.

Where's my water buffalo? :)

As for the main point, I'd hate to think we are inconsistent. I haven't seen any substantial change in behavior from when 5E was launched compared to ENWorld at any time previous (and I lurked heavily from the first year, well before I joined). If anything, everyone seems to be a bit more willing to cut some slack, since we can't just ignore each other in our respective preferred game forums. :D

It's fun to discuss things--mental exercise, or thought games.

I thought that was obvious. It's why most of us engage in these boards at all.
