Weretiger ECL 1 ?!?!?

I'd say a weretiger should be a +5 level equivalent (possibly +4).

It's slightly more powerful (as a PC) than the werebear, which is +4.

I don't think any party of 11th level PCs (minumum starting "level" for a "+5" weretiger) will be overshadowed by a weretiger character.

Keep in mind that both the Weretiger and the Werebear are required to be at least ECL +6, since they have 6 Hit Dice.

(I realize that the DMG puts Werebears at ECL +4, but many of the rules for ECLs have changed since the DMG was printed.)

Where did you find this?

Anyway, lycanthropes must have at least as many character levels as their animal form has Hit Dice (DMG p. 23). Since the animal's Hit Dice doesn't increase when the character's level increases, this rule takes care of the intent behind the rule you mentioned.

They've published additional rules for "ECLs"? (Besides the changes in the FRCS.)

It has been stated several times by the game designers. (I can't recall exactly who, though. :( ) But it's one of the only concrete rules that have been laid down for ECLs.

They haven't published any new rules, but they obviously have changed the way that ECLs are figured. The ECLs in the DMG are fairly innacurate when compared to the newer ECLs that have been published in Dragon Magazine and the FRCS.

Personally, my edjumacated guess would be to take the ECL of the base animal and add 2.

So that would net the following ECLs, based on Dragon #293:

Werebear (brown bear): ECL 12
Wereboar: ECL 9
Wererat (dire rat): ECL 4
Weretiger: ECL 12
Werewolf: ECL 5.

Maybe CR +2 is a better guesstimate...

Werebear ECL +7
Wereboar ECL +5
Wererat ECL +4
Weretiger ECL +7
Werewolf ECL +5

Hmmmm.... methinks I'm down to two options....

1. Disallow the character as too powerful for the current group
2. Create some home-brew rules to allow an overall level 4 PC to be a weretiger.

I think you need to use option 1. Otherwise you are in real danger of this new character overshadowing the others with cool and nifty abilities, immunities and amazing strength and damage output.

Why do they want to introduce a weretiger anyway? because of the "rich role playing possibilities"? :D

Cheers
